A Republican congressman in Missouri is standing strong in the face of a Democrat-backed push to outlaw certain weapons in the state, characterizing the effort as a Communist-style politics and vowing its legislative failure.

House Democrats are bringing forth a bill that requires certain semi-automatic rifle and pistol owners to either destroy or surrender their weapons within 90 days of enactment of the law, Fox News reports. The bill would also ban the manufacture and import of the weapons, Fox News adds.

Republican Rep. Caleb Jones voiced his displeasure, tweeting Thursday that “the only way this bill will pass is if a hammer and sickle is sewn onto Old Glory.”

Democrats proposed the bill in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., in December.

Another bill Democrats have proposed would require parents who own weapons inform their children’s schools, Fox News reports.

I'm vapor locked at the moment - and can't respond to that Liberal/Progressive/Marxist/Socialist/Commie pinko  B/S.
“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”  H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun,  July 26, 1920.

Quit holding back Frosty, tell us how you REALLY feel .  ;D
In the early 60's, about the time I started school, I saw the logic in the Republican argument against Johnsons "Great Society", "If you take all the money out of it how is it going to pay for 2 things at once ?"
In 1968 the things being said to promote the GCA 68 didn't make sense to an 8 year old kid, I asked my Dad how blacks could be safer from crime if their guns were taken away, (blacks shooting blacks was the biggest selling point)
He looked at me really funny, chuckled and didn't answer me .
I've been asking the same question ever since, "If it defies logic then how is it supposed to work ?"
By the time I got out of the Marines and Reagan took office I had reached the point you're at now, that's why I have so little patience with the idea of compromise, or even tolerance of the people I have watched engage in stupidity and subversion for over 45 years.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri lawmaker is proposing to send colleagues to prison for introducing gun control legislation — a plan that even its sponsor acknowledges has no chance of passage but nonetheless highlights the increasingly strident tone of gun measures in Missouri’s generally pro-gun Legislature.

Rep. Mike Leara said Tuesday that he considers his bill a statement of principle. It would make lawmakers guilty of a felony punishable by up to four years in prison if they introduce legislation restricting gun rights.

“I have no illusions about the bill making it through the legislative process, but I want it to be clear that the Missouri House will stand in defense of the people’s constitutional right to keep and bear arms,” Leara, a Republican from suburban St. Louis, said in a written statement. He declined further comment.

Since last year’s deadly mass shootings in Colorado and Connecticut, state and federal lawmakers have grappled with gun legislation. President Barack Obama has proposed an assault weapons ban, background checks and restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines. But Missouri’s Republican-led Legislature has taken a different approach — more guns, not less.

State Rep. Stacey Newman, D-St. Louis, called Leara’s measure “unconstitutional” and said she would go directly to prison if the bill passes. Newman is the sponsor of a measure that would require guns to be sold by a licensed dealer and force that dealer to conduct a background check.

Even one of Leara’s fellow Republicans said he probably wouldn’t support the bill.
