Police said a woman knocked on the resident's door and asked to use his cellphone to call police, claiming she was just involved in a domestic dispute with a family member. The resident's son then gave her a cellphone.
"She walked out to the middle of the yard, which we suspect was a signal for the other suspects to come in and do the home invasion," Lt. Sal Abruscato told WPBF 25 News.
Police said that's when three masked gunmen entered the home and demanded money from the victim and his family.
"They were violent," Abruscato said. "They did hit one of the victims in the back of the head while he was laying down on the ground. He didn't do anything to provoke it. They just wanted the money."
The intruders took a safe, a laptop and even the family's Yorkshire terrier. Police said they got away in a silver Ford Taurus.
A neighbor, who asked WPBF not to use her name, said the victim is having a tough time dealing with the crime.
"It's been a terrible ordeal for her," the neighbor said.
