Unless I missed it, we used them for bait along the shore in Wilmington, NC. Very prevalent in Parris Island. They swarm on the beach as locusts,..... ;)

At least it's not the crabs.... :P
He means sand FLIES or no see-ums. He's a yankee, cut him some slack, 'cause God knows he got his share down there. For the rest of you, these are tiny gnat like things that are almost invisible but will make you itch worse than a mosquito. The sand flea is a tiny shrimp/crab thing we use as bait down here.

Hi;

    Ya know, it takes a long time to get a  MAGGOT  to know the difference between Male and Female Flea. Have any of you Ladies completed the Parris Island 500 ? If not maybe you need a little motivation - as in 1 -3 -7 day " moat ".  Then we can have some fun with you at CCP -  The last federal institution to have a rock pile gang ( by the whistle ).

    Most of the area/buildings I worked out of have been demolished and new buildings erected. What you saw and used in the 50-60-70's is all gone, with the exception of 2nd Bn Brick Barracks. 1st Bn is all brick buildings, 3rd Bn is being torn down and the NEW 3rd Bn Resort and Health Spa is located in a former housing section along the former 2nd Bn PT area.

    The Confidence Course of the 50,60,70,80's is gone...It is now located in between 2nd Bn and the 3rd Bn pt course that many of us remember.

     Gone is the 1st Bn , 2nd Bn and 3rd Bn Chow Halls, Now there is a centralized "main" chow hall located in the area of 2nd Bn supply and 2nd Bn clothing storage.

     Gone is the Picturials in Weapons Bn Chapel, Remember the scenes of the WW1 Devil Dog's  and the horror of the German soldiers ?  Now there is a Central Chapel.  No more marching through the sand to 3rd Bn from 2nd Bn for the Catholics.

     Gone is the Parris Island that you remember and fear/love. Gone is the world I use to train recruits.....And it is for the better.  What these "kids" have to learn is 15-20 times what I had to teach...There is no time for "Playing Games". Remember your "red monsters" that you had to carry in your right rear pocket and study every time you were not being taught by your Drill Instructor ?

    They have been replaced by a book that is about the same size only 150 pages of the most advanced weapons and systems that you have to know and be taught about , along with the basic knowledge and usual customs and courtesties and histories of the Corps.

     Gone is the Marine Corps that I knew, today, My Marine Corps is filled with Brave young people that follow in the BEST TRADITIONS of the CORPS.   I sleep peacefully every night knowing they are on duty and standing post !

God bless Uncle Sam's Misguided Children! I am an old school Jarhead but have to say how impressed I am by the young men and women that constitute today's Corps. With few exceptions, they exemplify the finest traditions and honor we lod guys have expected from them.
