Anybody own a Kindle Fire?
« on: March 08, 2013, 05:48:51 PM »
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and buying one of the small 7 inch ones. I just want to read books, surf the web and check my email. The $200 price point is about right. Any reason not buy it, or is there something better at a similar price?

PS I don't need it to be a phone. WiFi only is all I'm looking for.

My girl friend has had one since they came out and she loves it. If you don't want itunes or the capability to listen to podcasts and such its a great device.

I have the 8.9 inch screen Kindle Fire HD.  I bought mine for the same reasons you expressed.  Both the audio and video quality is top notch.  Inasmuch I already have a smartphone and a laptop, I was only interested in a device for consumptive activities like viewing movies, reading books and magazines in addition to messaging capabilities with ease of portability.  While Amazon Apps are a bit limited for now, you can download most Google Store apps with little or no problem.  You can go on YouTube for Kindle Fire tutorials or get the neighborhood middle school student to do it for you.  Spent the $79 for Amazon Prime to have movie/tv veiwing as well as their free lending library. If you have "older eyes" I would recommend the 8.9".

I have the regular Kindle Fire (bought it just before the new ones came out)..... the only big differences is that the new ones are HD with stereo speakers. Frankly, I've seen both and it's not a big difference. The regular Fire has great video quality and the sound is good too. If I were in the market again, I'd still go with the standard for $150.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

Friend of mine had the Kindle Fire and I use the Kindle keyboard.  I only intend to read books on it, so the Fire is way more than I need.  It has more storage than mine, but at 2000 books, I should be ok.

"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters."

I just bought the Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0" for 199. 2 days later Walmart had them for 179.I chose the tab over the fire for it's sd expansion slot and the fact that it still has the kindle app for books. Both the fire and the tab have pluses and minuses over the other. My wife still uses her kindle 3g keyboard for her books.
"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
- Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776
