Flash, glow, hissssss. Silence..
« on: March 21, 2013, 05:18:00 AM »
I just dumped about an ounce of very sweet coffee in the keyboard. I feel the "Pepsi Syndrome".. I you see a flash and faint glow to the Northwest, call Hazmat and pray.. I'm screwed..
First time I've been up for the beginning of your show in months..
Hope the trip to B'ham that the wife is ready to leave me rather than make doesn't follow suit..
Right 1/4 of my keyboard beginning to crystallize.. "Mother..."...
"Tone".....
"Static".....
"Silence"......
**********
Seriously, I'll be off till this gets fixed. This stuff is gonna dry and NOTHING IS GONNA WORK..

rubbing alchohol and a paint brush,  depending on the keyboard you may have to open it up.  the alchohol will clean off the coffee and evaporate without leaving a residue.  don't pour it but wipe it on with the brush, smaller model types (1/4-1/2in wide work best.

20 yrs in avionics we clean EVERYTHING with it.  A supervisor dumped coffee into a laptop and immediately disassembled it and cleaned it.  It worked for a couple days but it had gotten inside the drive, which he couldn't get apart to clean.
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Well santa, this may come as cold comfort, but you've helped a brother out. I was debating whether to spring for the $80 "drop and spill" warranty on my new tablet. Now I'll be buying it. ;D Good luck Bro.

Wal-mart has keyboards for $10.

I keep spares because my wife likes coffee.   ;D  ;D

Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.   Cleans all manner of electronics.

And makes a great indoor flame thrower.
Will work for ammo

They sell 5 packs of keyboards.   when I had the cabinet shop, we were lucky to get 3 months out of them before the dust killed them.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

On a borrowed machine...
FQ, GET THE INSURANCE!!!
(I didn't think you liked me that much.. Glad to know I'm still a brother  ;D)
I took it into the only place around here and I'm not comforted..
The guy's a wiseass. I get the feeling he's gonna come back with some "kick me, cuz I'm a dumbass" kinda deal where I owe him a few hundred bucks to get it back "inop", or he'll give me $50 towards the last one that came in in a similar condition..
"I don't trust him"...
You knoiw the type.. He's one of those who looks down his nose at whatever you have, because you didn't become his personal fanboy before you asked a question.. (I've had dealings with him before.) He's actually the reason I got the machine I did. I just didn't get it from him..
The thing has an I7 processor. It's a flamethrower.. If it's dead, I'll replace it somewhere else..
**
So, here are the questions, now..
How do I keep from getting taken for a ride from this guy?
I can't/don't have $1,500 to replace it.. Any suggestions on a machine under $500?
I've always liked Dell, (despite "Carrot Top"), for general durability.. They ain't cheap though..
If "cheap = problems", and it generally does, I don't need it.. Any first hand experience on what worked, or didn't, would be very much appreciated..
**
Just to complete the story "so far".. after the coffee, I shot some glass cleaner in it (to dilute the sugar), pulled the battery and stood it up on end and threw some very hot water where the coffee landed..  ::) ::) ::)..
I was chatting with the guy on the radio as it was dying.. He asked that if anybody out there could help me, to give me a call...  :-[ A mutual FB friend called me and told me to do the battery and water..
I played the role of dying computer with my radio guy.. I got a laugh out of him.. It wasn't a total loss..
I'm led to believe that the water probably killed the machine, though..
> So who makes a "fluid-proof" laptop/keyboard?....
Guess I'll be renewing my subscription to Consumer Reports..
I know, they're a bunch of socialists.. The information is generally good though..

Time to give this machine back now..
See ya when I can..
Joe..
