Ruger SR22....

I just read Jeff Quinn's review of the ruger SR22

 and he seems to like it. I'd like to have something like it for practice in these times of uncertain ammo supplies but seem to remember MB being somewhat reticent (or am I dreaming?) The silly upside down safety button could certainly be a problem, I can see that, but..........thoughts?

From what I've been hearing, and seeing in local stores, you may be better off practicing with 5.56.
.22 LR seems to be the hardest caliber to find at the moment.
Bricks of 500 that used to run $17 are now selling for $40 + if you can find one.

I have about equal quantities of .22 & 5.56 but........finding a compact pistol in 5.56 is proving troublesome - not to say pissin' my neighbours off

Only .22LR besides shotshells w/#12 shot is over at CTD shop in McKinney TX yesterday.  It was my first time and last time there.  I will never do business with those thieves again.  100rds of CCI Mini Mag for $34.99 and 500 rds of Aquila Super Colbri was $149.99!  Plenty of 5.56 from $28 to $50 for 20rds!  (55gr FMJs)

Airguns boys. A good one will run you one and a half to three and a half bills in .22, but you're getting near .22 short velocities and they're quiet. Varmints and annoying cats are gone, and ammo is than three cents a shot (and that's if you buy the good stuff). You can shoot in your backyard and no one is the wiser. Just saying.

A 22 cal pellet rifle is alot of fun.  I have a HW95, with a scope, and it will give very small groups at 30 yards.
Just like .22 rf, it likes particular pellets, and will give 1/2" groups with JSB match diablo, exact jumbo RS.
plenty of power to harress big black birds.  Velocity (chronoed) is 650-700 fps.
The only real noise is from the springer action.  THIS IS NOT A KIDS TOY. It is an adults rifle.
Regarding a scope, Springers are tough on scopes, so if you want to scope one, get a scope for an air rifle.
I bought this one just to keep the velocity below 1000 fps.

By the way the only .22 ammo available around her in western washington is the match stuff, which I have
seen going for $140.00 (!!!!) a brick. I saw CCI standard velocity at $80.00 a brick.  Fortunately I have sufficient for myself and my grand kids for quite awhile.
I have alot of 17HMR, which costs .20 a shot 2 years ago, and now is .25-.28 a shot.
There was a guy looking to buy a 17HMR rifle at the store last week, just because he could find 17HMR ammo.

Here in socal a box of rem golden bullets are$85.00. So 22lr is just not worth the money right now. All my 22's are staying in the safe. My 9mm and 40 guns are less expensive right now. Heck my sr22 is still new in the box.

My 2 cents.

If you want the look and feel of a Walther p99 by al means go with the sr22.  But for my money, I'd go, with a 22/45. More accuracy with a fixed barrel and sights. You can get them in plain or in tactical with a top rail and threaded barrel.  A non Ruger alternative is the Browning Buckmark. Also available in a number of configurations. If you have small hands check out the Beretta Neos. I think it's the smallest grip of any 22. Great for ladies.

Glad some ofmyoumcan find .22s in your areas. There are none to be had here at any price.  Except .22 shorts. I may look at the possibility of changing the recoil springing my 22s to see if they would function with shorts.

Air guns are fun. I regularly take crows, crackles and chipmunks in the back yard with mine. I have and old Crosman MK1 pistol that's been ported and  does quite a job on pests.

Everybody has their own tastes, but I'm with Alf on this one.  I would rather have the 22/45 than the SR22 pistol.  I wasn't very impressed with the trigger on it, and I'm also not a fan of the safety setup.  I have large hands and I found the grip on the SR22 too small.

However, I would rather have the Buckmark than either of them!  I own a Mark II Ruger and a Buckmark, and I just find the Buckmark to be a better shooting gun.  It seems to be more accurate in my hands, and I also prefer the shape and angle of the grip.  The safety is easier and more natural to manipulate as well, especially for those of you with 1911 experience.

If you want a true "understudy" for one of your fighting guns, I would look at one of the conversion kits for your centerfire gun before I bought the SR22, but if this is just a plinking gun, then I'd lean towards the Buckmark.  I'm sure the SR22 is well made, but it just isn't for me.  It might be a perfect gun for somebody with different likes and dislikes, but I'll pass.

Hopefully there is a range close by where you can rent one and try it out before you buy?

Meant to give a shout out to a fellow Weihrach air gun shooter.   I opted for the HW77 underlever for additional accuracy.  I have it topped with a Bushnell 5-15x Legend.   My middle son took it to a range "party" where everyone was suppose to bring something interesting to share and shoot.  They all laughed at a 15x scope on an airgun until they shot it.

Had to get mine from a Canadian dealer, because, Beeman and Straight Shooters all claimed the HW77 is under-powered for .22.  Boy are they wrong.  Of course now, Pyramyd carries them.
