All this custum gun stuff, has me jonesing...
« on: March 31, 2013, 03:31:30 PM »
Ok, so now I want a custom gun, only I want to do it.   I am thinking a cheap older bolt 22 gun.   something that is not worth alot, but something I can build up and just have some fun with.   any recomendations on a model?

Marlin model 80.  Hard to beat, IMHO.

If you change your mind and want an auto... Ruger 10/22.

I'd go 10/22 as there are lots of options for the things you might not want to do yourself like barrels, stocks etc.. Of course if you're looking to make a statement, a custom bolt will stand out more than a custom 10/22. Still, having your choice of umpteen barrels and trigger groups is a good thing. And I think that being in Oregon, you can put a suppressor on the thing. (of course thats probably easier than finding ammo).

1  every one has one ( well not me has a 1022) 2.  Too many parts for them, not what I want.  3.   too much money to make them shoot worth a damn( seen tons of model 60s out shoot $1000 1022s)  4 i don't like them.     5 I want something no one else has.

I had a Remington nylon 66ish butter knife handle mauser action. I have no idea what the model number was, but it had the same ugly molded stock as the semis. Thing is, that was the most scary accurate out of the box .22 I've ever shot. And stock aside, it was a very attractive resiever with the butterknife bolt handle. I regret giving it away, but it went to my cousin when she had a son, and as we both learned to shoot on it I figured it should go to her boy. Look for one on Gun broker. You'll have to redneck up a stock for it, but as far as the internals? Don't touch them. Its minute of tree rat at 75 yards.

I picked up an old 511T bolt action 22 from my dad a while back.  Someone had given it to him and he gave it to me thinking it was my Grandpa's (his mind is no steel trap  ;) ).  I fixed the 14lb trigger (improper assembly) but managed to break the mag release/retention spring.  I am toying with the idea of refinishing/tuning the whole thing but I'm not sure what direction.  I am more inclined to make a replica of a M40 with a duracoat finish than a traditional wood and blued finish restoration.

I think if I were looking for a custom 22 I'd look at the 10-22 but for a bolt gun an old Army Trainer would get the nod for me.

I'm in the same boat, except I already have the gun...... I just don't know which way I'm going with it.
When my uncle passed away, my aunt gave me several guns..... one was an old Remington .22 bolt action. There is some light pitting around the model number, but I think it is a 514. The barrel has been sawed off just behind the front sight dovetail to about 20" and the stock is broken.
I'm thinking of a complete rebuild with either a repro stock or I may do one myself (I've always wanted to make a stock).
It would make a great beginner gun for the grandkids.

TAB, you may have just lit the fire under my butt to dig into the project.

I wonder if cmp has any decent 22 actions.   they use to have tons of them.  I bet they are all gone now.   that would be a good starting point.
