.22 Rimfire Ammo Availability ?
« on: April 02, 2013, 08:27:28 AM »
How bad is it in your area? I went to Cabela's yesterday and I wasn't paying attention to the time, and wound up getting there 10 minutes before they opened. When I got to the gun department there was a hoard of people all bumping into each other in the ammo isles. They were all grabbing at the CCI .22 ammo they had on the top shelf. They had a big sign that said....... 50 ROUND BOXES LIMIT 2....100 ROUND BOXES LIMIT 1....... I've never seen this bad of a shortage on rimfire ammo. Admittingly I haven't been paying attention because I've got a ton stockpiled. They all stripped the shelf bare in less than 5 minutes. Is it this bad around you?

Local WallyWorld is out of stock.  My favorite local gun store has some of the sub-sonic stuff left, but nothing else.  .22mag is even harder to find.  It's been just about the same at each store I've visited here. And "here" is in the general Tampa Bay area.

If you do find a box, the price is double what it was just a few months ago.

Fortunately, I am pretty well stocked.  Still, I don't have enough that I want to use it up at the range until I have some assurance of being able to replace what I shoot.

Same around me. Interestingly, 17 HMR is quite available.  Maybe I need a new gun???

Have been out of rimfire around here for awhile.  Maybe a few shot shells, and some .17 but double the price.

First to go was .22 LR, then .22 mag, and finally .17HMR

Two places got a little in last week.  One got a case of CCI 22 mininmag.  $19 for a box of 100 limit one box.

Big box store got some ammo in, including .22.  Not sure how much they got, but on my third stop that day they had finally stocked it.  There were about a dozen boxes of 50 .22 LR.  $1.99-$3.49  Limit of 4 boxes.  Sold out almost immediately.

That's my problem. I don't mind burning through the stuff if I can replace it. But now I don't know when this nonsense is going to subside. If and when it does you can bet the price will not drop to what it was before Sandy Hook. If there is another shooting in the meantime, all bets are off.

In case you all haven't heard, try this for ammo:   http://www.gunbot.net/   Gunbot gives you the price per round, per box, bulk, availability, etc.  I gave up on 22LR simply because at a minimum .35 cents/round and up the price is ridiculous even if you can find any in stock anywhere.  And .45 ACP averages a dollar a round and 30.06 a dollar and a half to over two dollars per round.

All the government has to do at this point is slap a separate tax and/or insurance requirement on purchasing ammo/owning firearms and you get de facto gun control.   Only the wealthy and powerful(not to mention the criminal element)will be able to afford to own/possess firearms and ammunition.

Which just might be the plan.

High ammo prices don't really effect most gun owners.   I know hunters that fires 2 or 3 shots a season.   they check thier zero, then go hunt.  If you can call sitting in a blind hunting.
