First IDPA

Shoot my first local, indoor IDPA last night.   Below is a picture of the second course of fire.   Yes, that's me in the center, "The Most Interesting Man in the World."



Simple course of fire.  Standing stationary.  Shoot the two targets on either side of "the man" with 2 shots, tactical sequence.  Then shoot the one way behind him with 2 shots.   Pick up 30# box of bullets from barrel right in front of me with one hand.  Cross right and engage right two targets w/ 2 shots while retreating.  Cross left and engage far left target 2/shots.

Forgot the tactical sequence. Got a procedural penalty.  Duh.  Don't have the scores, but at least I didn't hit "the man".  And as far as I know I didn't get any Failure to Neutralize penalties.  

I enjoyed IDPA.  It's revolver friendly as most courses take less than 18 rounds.  Actually all we did were 12.  Auto shooters typically put extra shots on target but I didn't have that luxury shooting Stock Service Revolver.    We finished with two simple speed shoots.  One was three targets, shoot each once, reload and repeat 3 more times.   The other was a simple draw and shoot 4 center mass, 2 head.

Sounds like fun. I'm going to wait until I retire in another year and a half before I get into anymore organized shooting. Most all of the IDPA shoots at my club are on weekends when I work. Looking forward to when every day is Sunday!

I shot IDPA several times and really enjoyed it but I have a hard time with the shooters that think their bullet proof and almost run thru the course for time. The biggest problem I had is taking cover sometimes thinking I was John Wayne and it can get expensive with the price of ammo

Here's my score.  Overall I place, oh about 3rd from the bottom.  I was top SSR... also last SSR... also only SSR.  Stage 2 is the one described above.  Given that I fumbled the reload (dropped two rounds out of the speedloader and had to pick them up and manually insert them) and that 3 of the targets where shot one handed.  Wow, I though I did good, only to find out I ranked 16/22 of all shooters on that stage.   Still okay first showing on a very busy night with lots of shooters.

That's not bad at all Alf. You've got to remember you're competing against guys that run these courses every week. Sometimes 2 and 3 times a week in practice. While they aren't classified as "pros", they certainly have more opportunity to run this game than most who go up against them.

This sounds much like Trapshooting. While you do have some beginners at a lot of these ATA shoots, most are seasoned veterans at it. It's not at all uncommon to be standing alongside someone on the 16 yard line who shoots 10,000 targets a year or more. They're tough to win against. The bigger the shoot, the more of them there will be. That still doesn't take away from the fun of it. The best thing is to shoot against yourself, and not pay attention to how you place overall. I've shot some of my best rounds, and still placed way down on the list. I walked away feeling great.

I shoot IDPA against myself.  Although I might look to see where I placed verus my friends (usually a LOT lower since, as Bill mentioned ,they get a LOT more practice time) I am only really concerned with how I do match to match in my standing and points down.  I shoot USPSA the saem way.  I want to see improvement in my individual scores, which will eventually mean actually being higher than last

Second one tonight. Different range.  Shot ESR.   The  ranges gunsmith and I bonded instantly since he too shoots with the same rig.

Had fun. Learned some new things.  scores in a day to two.

Thanks for the invite Les.  I've shot USPSA at River Bend and Cherokee.  I've done indoor at GPSL.  The main problem is distance from Marietta.  That and an outdoor shoot takes all day when you factor in travel. I'm trying to do at least 5 outdoor shoots this year.  If the work schedule works out I might show up.

Give Bill Noyes a shout out from me.  We go back to another life, another career almost 40 years ago.

Alf... sadly I don't see Bill or Cindy on a regular basis... I live in the Tampa Bay area but shot a lot of Ga State and Area 6 matches up there when I was a little bit more competitive... hoping they (South River, Cherokee etc) will sponsor an Area 6 3 gun this year.... working on Shannon, Manny and Frank at Frostproof too...
