CT Sen. Murphy to Rupert Murdoch: Don’t Televise NRA-Sponsored NASCAR Race

Posted on April 11, 2013 by Robert Farago

Sen. Chris Murphy

I write today to urge you to not broadcast NASCAR’s NRA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on April 13th. This race, which is being sponsored by the National Rifle Association (NRA), is going to take place during the Senate’s consideration of legislation to reduce gun violence. The race not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race.
This celebration of guns is inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre. But most importantly, broadcasting this race, which will highlight the NRA and its radical agenda during this time, sends a harmful signal to the families affected by gun violence, as well as the millions of Americans who support sensible gun control measures and enjoy your sports programming . . .

The horror that unfolded on December 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School has sparked a national conversation about the adequacy of our gun laws. Considering your support of sane gun control measures and the extreme nature of the NRA, I urge you to not broadcast this race on April 13th. Inserting Fox Sports in this debate at this critical time will give credence to an extreme organization that is opposed to reasonable policies to stem gun violence.

Is there no outlet where the wussification of America is immune?

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

not by the looks of it.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

The NRA membership tent was pretty busy while I was there at the NRA500 so the whining wasn't affecting anyone out there.

Look on the bright side. He might be the jackass that shot himself there. As it is, I see his point. If they let a pro-gun group sponsor a redneck sport, next thing you know, it will open the door for beer and tobacco companies to do the same. :o ;D

Quote
A spectator died at Saturday’s night’s NRA 500 after receiving a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to an Associated Press report, Kirk Franklin, a 42-year-old from Saginaw, Texas, had been arguing with fellow infield campers prior to the incident.
Several fellow race goers were said to have witnessed the incident, although none of them were in danger of harm.
The Sprint Cup’s annual night race at Texas Motor Speedway had received extra press attention this year on the account of it being sponsored by the National Riffle Association.
The race retained its traditional victory celebration, which sees the winner firing six-shooters with blanks, despite the controversy.

Perhaps it would have been more politically suitable if the idiot had run out on the track and been run over by the lead pack on the final lap.   ::)

What's the annual death rate for vehicles?  Still around 30,000 a year?  It's for the children!!
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

I was encouraged by the fact that NASCAR invited the good Senator to enjoy a big steaming mug of STFU, and let the race go on.  Just goes to prove that NASCAR knows it's fan base.
I love waking up every morning knowing that Donald Trump is President!!
