Just heard on Tom Gresham's Gun Talk Alan Gotleib of the 2nd Amendment Foundation saying that their lobbying arm the Citizens Action Committee was in the room helping write the Manchin Toomey Amendment.  These are the guys who brought us Heller & McDonald and they are saying we've got a good bill here. The details can be heard in the first 20 min of the April 14th broadcast @GunTalk.com. I put my trust in Tom Gresham. That goes for the 2nd Amendment Foundation also. They've never jerked me around like the NRA(& yes I'm a Life
member). I read the bill and called & told my Senators and told them I'd support them voting in favor of the M&T amendment. Light up your flamethrowers guys and give me your thoughts.(After you've listened and are informed please)

It might seem like a good idea now, but it guts the FOPA. And frankly, why compromise when we can win by simply denying them victory? Give it a week and everyone will be talking about immigration reform. (insert your own quotes). As it is I say, not one step back. Let them find that 41st Senaror and I'll negotiate.  Until then, the answer is no. I won't compromise with folks who won't be satisfied and come back next week wanting more. Even if I were a freshman D senator I'd tell Reid and BO to KMA on this one.

You're a damn fool if you think Alan Gottleib would do anything to reduce our Second Amendment rights. He's been fighting the Good Fight longer than many gun owners have been alive. Not just shouting from the peanut gallery like so many. He's been there, done that in D.C. and around the country. Who do you think was behind McDonald vs. Chicago? Furthermore, I really doubt Gottleib's legal team didn't have a direct hand in this. Are we to believe they're so stupid and Dave Kopel is a genius? Finally, use some common sense. Why would two A-rated Senators suddenly throw together a crap bill that will damage their chances for re-election in solidly pro-gun states?

I'm wondering if Kopel's article was written before the final version of the bill was put out. His assertion that MTA only prohibits the AG from creating a registry but nobody else is wrong. It gives teeth to the current prohibition on registration by making a felony for anyone to create a registry or divulge this info with a minimum of 5yrs max 15yrs in federal prison.

Here are the good things in the bill.
1. You would be able to buy a handgun anywhere in the USA not just in your state.
2. Anyone who sells a gun a through the NICS check system would be protected from lawsuits and liability just like an FFL dealer. That is not the case now even with a NICS Check you can be dragged into court.
3.It strips all previous language in the bill(Language written by Senator Schumer.)
4. All private sales outside of commercial venue's (IE gun shows) are exempt.
5. If you have a CCL you wouldn't have to wait for the check just pick up and go.
6. Last but most important it provides a path for Veterans to get their gun rights back who lost their rights when put on a psychiatric watch list. There is currently no way for these guys to get their rights back and some lost their rights for something as benign as saying they were having trouble sleeping after being in a combat zone or were stressed over finances.  

Here are the Bad
1. Gun shows and anyone within 200 yards of a gun show would have to go through a background check to complete a firearms purchase.
2.All internet sales of firearms would be require to be shipped to a FFL.(Kind of redundant since its illegal to ship a a firearm though the mail to anyone but yourself unless it's going to a FFL

Right now it seems Obama would rather have no bill since he can't get AWB or a ban on Hi-Cap Mags He would rather have no bill so he can beat on Conservatives for standing in the way. As it stands we will either get a progun bill or no bill. I'd like to force Obama to sign a progun bill that gives us back a ton of rights just so he can close his "Gun Show Loophole".

Michael, Marshall, or anyone hooked into the upper echelons of the gun rights movement please comment and give some clarity. It seem like this is fighting smart where either we get a whole lot back and give a token concession or we force the gun haters to fall on their sword and take the heat for killing the bill.
