Charity Spending

Top 50 charities with the worst ten-year record.........

Note that many are "sound-alike" names for more widely known charities.

That's why I don't donate to large charities, especially the ones like Susan G. Komen who spend a large portion of their money on attorneys they use to sue and shut down other charities with similiar interests.

I like to keep it small and keep it local.  100% of the proceeds from my charity go to the beneficiaries.
Bravery and stupidity are often synonymous.  So are cowardice and intelligence.

That's a tradition we like to hold on to.  The same can't be said for the rest of you 'Subjects of the Queen'."--said to a Canadian friend who just doesn't get it.

Same here........... I donate to locally run and organized charities for the most part, such as Hospice and our Oncology Center.

Hint number one:

If you are looking at a piggy bank or card type donation device in a public place, and you do not know the organization very well, don't give.  Most of these collection items are by companies who pay the organization a flat dollar amount for the right to use their name for a set period of time.

Joe's Fundraising will give the American Diabetes Association $10,000 in four quarterly installments, and in turn the ADA allows Joe's to put collection jars in businesses in these states.

Regardless of what Joe collects, the ADA only gets $10,000, but since Joe collected in ADA's name it all shows up as income and expenditure in fundraising.

If your medically able, donate blood at the Red Cross. Pretty tough to skim off the top of that. Plus you get cookies and juice, and it only costs time not money.

I wish that the person who receives my blood donation was not charged!

Don't know what the Red Cross charges, but there is much expense in keeping blood available...can't put it in a mason jar on the shelf till it is needed.

If the charges are just what it takes to recoup their processing and storage costs, it's not so bad....and I'd guess they might have deals for those who can't afford the charge.

Found some FAQs about Red Cross blood  donating.

http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/donation-faqs

Here is one we have mentioned here.

Why am I charged for blood at the hospital when I have donated blood to the Red Cross previously?

Since 1960, the Red Cross has been reimbursed by hospitals for the costs associated with providing blood to hospital patients. The Red Cross does not charge for the blood itself that you have so generously donated. The Red Cross only recovers the costs associated with the recruitment and screening of potential donors, the collection of blood by trained staff, the processing and testing of each unit of blood in state-of-the-art laboratories, and the labeling, storage, and distribution of blood components. Hospitals may have their own additional charges related to the administration of blood and may pass on these costs to their patients.
