XDs-What a wonderful wife...
« on: June 21, 2013, 09:33:20 AM »
...and daughter!  They bought me an XDs (45 ) for Father's Day.  Totally surprised me after church with it, my wife had skipped to go buy it from Fred Meyer's.  It was almost divinely inspired too.  I shot a charity match on Saturday and got an XDS banner off the prize table.

Finally made it out to the range last night with my buddy, who saw my XDs and had to buy one of his own, where I put around a 100 rounds through it.  A mixed bag of reloads, factory ammo and some HOT reloads with 230g  Hornady XTPs.  It didn't like my reloads too well, after the first mag or two it wouldn't quite go all the way into battery.  It shot well and those who have reported the recoil isn't bad weren't lying.  Even with the hot loads it was still fun to shoot. And the size is impressive, my buddy brought out a Walther P22 (along with a MKII and a Ruger SS Security Six 22/22 Mag) and in the nylon holsters he had a hard time telling the difference.

I did have one "exciting" experience though.  An engineer had me build some rather large Polypropolene rounds (12" in diameter about 2" thick) a few months ago then changed some dimensions after I finished the first one.  So it became a target in waiting, well last night was its turn.  At 35 yards I shot it with the XDs, 3" low centered, and to my surprise it made a return trip, all the way to the wall of the shooting bay 20' behind us.  My buddy saw it fly by  :o.  ALWAYS WHERE SAFETY GLASSES!

The "recovered" bullet was a perfect example of expansion by extreme deceleration  ;D

I will still carry my XDM for the majority of the time, the XDs will be a back up or primary carry with a spare mag when I can't carry a gun  ;)

Most important lesson, shooting with friends after work is a blast  ;D

Congrats!  I handled one in my local shop and was very impressed with how it felt.  Pics?

My XDS and XDM in their Concealment Solutions Black Mamba

Don't shoot 2" thick polypropene even at 35 yards this XTP came back at us and hit the shed wall 20' behind us.  My buddy saw it coming back, I was happy I hit it  ;D

Just picked one up myself.  Haven't even shot it yet, but like the way it feels in my hand.  Will report here after it has been road-tested....

If you start having FTE or FTF check your grip.  I got a little frustrated until I figured out it was operator error.  BTW this was my first sub-compact 45 so more "seasoned" shooters may already know this  ;D

I haven't had the problem myself, but I have seen numerous posts on the XD forum about FTE, stovepipes, etc., that appear to be the result of limp-wristing or other grip problems. Several were repaired with some attention to grip.
They are very small cannons, and they take a wee bit of getting used to.

AND they are so nice for EDC.  I carry my XDM when I'm not working but in those "non-permisive" environments like my workplace it shines.  Comfortable and just about invisible in my Concealment Solutions Black Mamba (hybird IWB).

I agree. I can only carry when I leave NJ which is only a few times a year, but it is nearly invisible in the Crossbreed clone I have.
It's also really fun to shoot.

I love mine.  I was REALLY PO'd at Springfield for the way they initially handled the recall thing, but after getting the repaired gun back, all is forgiven!!  (The fact that they included a free 7-round mag in the return package didn't hurt their case with me, either).  It is the definition of what I tell my students is the "perfect gun for self-defense"..........the gun you'll carry EVERY day.  I LOVE IT!!!   ;D
I love waking up every morning knowing that Donald Trump is President!!
