How Offensive Are You? The Leap Offensive Speech Scale

In light of the Paula Deen controversy, I’d like to offer the following checklist for everyone to keep handy.

Have you ever used a racially charged word, in public or private?  Give yourself four points.

Have you used such a word, in public or private, while quoting someone else?  A crazy uncle, perhaps, or a comedian or rapper?  Give yourself three points.

Have you ever used such a word while reading aloud from Huckleberry Finn?  Or from any period piece that deals with the old South?  Did you ever think about such a word, in any way?  Did you ever hold a book in which it was printed?  Do you ever find yourself whistling ‘Zip-a-dee-doo da, Zip-a-dee-day,’ from Disney’s long banished ‘Song of the South?’  Give yourself two points.

Do you now, or have you ever, lived in the South, by which I mean the area below the Mason Dixon line, stretching from the Atlantic as far west as Texas?  (It’s up to you to decide of Florida counts.)  If so, give yourself one point.  Just on principle.

Have you ever, in public or private, used a judgmental or pejorative word in relation to a member of the opposite sex, or a person of a different sexual orientation?  Give yourself four points.  (What’s wrong with you?)

At any point, have you quoted the use of such a word?  For instance, a member of the opposite sex.  Or an actor or actress?  Give yourself three points.

Was there a time when you saw a movie, or listened to a piece of music (for instance, rap) in which such words were used?  Did you ever walk around San Francisco or New York and find yourself a little confused about people’s gender?  Give yourself two points.

Are you male?  Give yourself one point.  Are you white? Give yourself another point.  Really, you should know better.

If you are a progressive, have you ever used an insulting term to describe a political opponent?  Like, oh, say ‘tea-bagger’ or ‘redneck?’  Have you used the word ‘right-winger,’ or ‘religious nut?’  If so, give yourself zero points.  I mean, come on, why are those people so dang sensitive?  They need to grow up.  Weirdos.  (Probably home-schoolers too.  Sheesh.)

Media personality or talk-show host?  Lefty pundit or consultant?  Have you ever used the term ‘fundamentalist,’ or ‘hick?’  Have you ever called a mentally challenged child a ‘retard?’  (Hat tip to Mr. Maher.)  Do you routinely snarl and roll your eyes when you use the term ‘red-stater’ as if it meant ‘syphilitic cretin?’  Give yourself minus 4 points.  You never know when you might need to redeem an honest slip of the tongue in the future.

If you are a politician, have you ever lied under oath, misused your office, embezzled, cheated on your spouse or used your position to lever benefits for yourself or your family?  Give yourself a big fat zero.  You’re a politician for heaven’s sake!  What do people expect?  (At least you didn’t use a racially charged word, did you?  What? Take a zero anyway.  Nobody’s perfect.)

Now, score yourself.   If you scored between sixteen and twenty, immediately call a talk show for your mandated and cathartic emotional breakdown and explanation of that thing you think you might have done 20-25 years ago.  And remember, your career and social standing are now over.  But it’s what we expected.  In all likelihood, you’re a white, male, conservative.  Or might as well be.  Oh for the days of the impromptu gallows!

If you scored between ten and fifteen, you’re probably on a list anyway so watch your mouth.  A little self-flagellation, a little ‘mea culpa’ on a chat room, on a blog or Facebook page would be nice.  (Be careful not to actually use the words you’re accusing yourself of having used…it’s too hard to score and involves Calculus.)  You need some serious re-education.  What, were you raised by wolves?

If you scored between five and ten, we’re still disappointed.  However, you may be able to avoid embarrassment.  Please begin to keep a notebook logging all of your sins, of omission and commission, in the use of insulting, hurtful, judgmental, hateful words that make people feel sad.  If you’re a good boy or girl, we may let you burn it in public someday as an atonement.  And then we’ll ridicule you for good measure.

Now, should your score have been between zero and five, we can only say this, dear citizen. You’re a liar who hasn’t done nearly enough soul searching.  (Or a politician, progressive, celebrity or card-carrying member of an oppressed group, in which case, no worries.)

I hope this helps us all to be a little more conscious of the power of words.

Words like hypocrisy, stupidity, inconsistency, irrationality, drama and tyranny.

My 2 Ex wives say I'm very offensive ;D

I went to school when the un-redacted versions of Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn were required reading.

I recall the first colored television show, Amos and Andy

I was read to from Uncle Remus and learned the tale of the tar baby by heart.

I have lived through the eras of political correctness requiring the terms (in chronological order)  Niggra, Negro, Colored, African-American, Afro-American, Black and today I am not certain what is politically acceptable.

Through it all, I have lived by the precept that anyone I meet is going to be an okay person--until I am proved wrong.

My very first girlfriend was a Mexican girl named Martha Lopez (second grade, so it didn't amount to much in the physical sense).  By Junior High School I was captivated by a lovely Chinese girl named Joyce Chao.  In High School, I fell for a beautiful Hawaiian-Portuguese-Japanese lass whom I married prior to heading off to Vietnam and whom I divorced shortly after my return (but not before we'd made an absolutely drop-dead-gorgeous daughter who is Hawaiian, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Irish, Scottish.   Now, fit that into the "ethnicity" slot on the census form).  And I finally ended up with a white-bread wife who  has been with me for nearly 26 years, now.

In tallying up my score on Tom's test, I am not at all certain I can reliably count high enough.  I should probably be expelled from the country.  I don't know.

What I do know is I hold no prejudices of which I am aware, but I came from the same era as Paula Deen.  Words were commonly used in those days that are no longer used because we matured enough to realize how hateful those words might seem to another.  I do not believe Paula Deen ever uttered the "N" word with a purposefully hateful intent.  Just as I know I have not used that word hatefully.  It was simply another era.

I have often referred to myself as a combo Mick and Kraut.  One of my best friends calls himself a Pollack.  I have other friends who refer to themselves as Wops, Dagos, and Kykes.  Here in the South, all of us who are of a pale complexion fall under the umbrella of "Cracker."  The relative offensiveness of any of these terms comes from the intent--not from the word, itself.

What is most offensive in the Paula Deen tale of woe is not that she may have used a no-no word some 40 years ago. What is amazing is the level of hypocrisy displayed by the media in decrying Deen's egregious sin--a sin that I am certain anyone over 40 living in the South has committed more than once--and with a similar lack of hatefulness.

I weep for my country,

Even at a ball game, when someone talks during the anthem or doesn’t take off his hat, it pisses me off. I’m not one to be quiet about it, either.”  Chris Kyle

It's the same thing that is done in history courses.
Judging actions by today's standards not the standards of the time, and then condemning the participants as evil bastards .

Tom - I guess my career is ruined & I need to go to confession asap! Yup I'm a mackerel snapper.

Crusader Rabbit, You got a few years on me but I come from that same era of folks. It is sad that so called intelligent people are bringing up things that were supposedly said 20-30 yrs. ago when things were very different than now, what's even more sad is the way the MSM is dwelling on it. It is sad that people including, mainly politicians are more worried about being P/C then they are of dropping dead. Our nation has become a bunch of sorry a$$ cry babies aka: the sesame street generation, a lot of those kids are also the what's in it for me gen. I work for the public and I have been called cracker, white bread, bigot, racist M/F'r, honky, redneck as well as being spit upon. As you I don't make any assumptions regarding the person and most are all right people....until they prove me wrong. This is not the America I grew up in and I really don't care for the direction it is heading :(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Paula Deen commit her "sin" around the same time that our Fearless Leader has admitted to snorting coke?

Is it me, or are the priorities a little out of whack here?
I love waking up every morning knowing that Donald Trump is President!!

No, When she was saying it he was just a nappy wearing pikaninny .
That was back in the days when you picked your teams by saying "Eeny meeny miney moe, catch a nigger by the toe".
If I call some one a nigger it's now a "hate crime", but Cris Rock can say it about 150 times in his show and it's "stand up comedy".
So not only is free speech dead, so isn't "equal protection" .
This is a perfect example of how "political correctness"is nothing but  a euphemism for censorship.

Poor creature, you misunderstand.

The only reason Glorious Leader snorted got high did research was because of creepy ass crackers like Deen.
Glorious Leader and his apostles will forgive you this time.....you haven't been re-educated yet.

Shut up and get in the boxcar.
