suggestions for carrying equipment on your body.
« on: July 03, 2013, 01:32:17 PM »
I'm sure topics similar to this have already been discussed to varying degrees, but I thought I would bring it up given the climate of current events.

The thread on the Zimmerman trial got me to thinking harder about a topic I've breached before but never fully worked out. How do y'all currently or plan to carry multiple AR and pistol mags, knives, etc. in the event of riot or bugging out in a hostile environment. I thankfully don't live in South Florida or another big city, but I do live in a small town a couple hours from Florida where I'm a minority. The locals are fairly unmotivated in general but racial tensions have always been high here. My first plan is to shelter in place and defend the house to whatever extreme is required. The two sets of neighbors across the street are well known and trusted. I expect them to put up a fight if necessary but we haven't discussed it personally. Other immediate neighbors aren't well known but aren't likely to be part of a riot. My biggest concern is the rental house we live in isn't very secure against the threat of break-ins and has lots of windows. It thankfully is brick. I can't currently do that much with the house. If the circumstances required/allowed there I'd potential to bug out and head north to more friendly areas.

For home defense, my primary firearms are a couple Glocks and a hypothetical AR. My wife's primaries are an 870 and a revolver. (They were already hers before we got married) I foresee home defense at that level of attack a joint effort with, ideally, her needing to back me up. I have somewhat poorly rigged a duty belt, a holster, and some military surplus mag pouches together. It works but not well. I know vests are used by the tacticool folks. I expect they would actually be best in many ways, and I'm not opposed to them. However, I'm looking for something more subtle, cheaper, more readily available that is still efficient. I'm looking for something that would transition well among home defense, truck defense, and property defense. Something that would hold rifle mags, pistol mags, shotgun shells, etc.. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Either a "shooting vest", or combat harness and cartridge belt .
Either one works fine.
Remember, if you are going for "subtle" you are fairly limited in how much stuff you can carry, if you are going to carry AR's and mags and a bunch of other crap you are going to be obvious any way.
There is no "subtle".
There is concealed carry or combat loaded, there is no effective in between.

Very true about the subtle thing. I kept getting distracted and rushed my last post. Let me clarify a bit. If I'm having to use it in a defensive situation, I really don't care what I look like. The appearance thing is more for when it's not on use and may accidentally seen. Maybe, I should not care about giving a mall ninja appearance and just use what works.

That would be my choice, if some liberal is dumb enough to give you crap you can always point out just how stupid they are to be poking some one who is armed to the teeth .
The liberal won't get it, but everyone in hearing will get a good laugh at their expense.

Did you happen to catch the prosecutor saying:"He was armed with a handgun and not one but TWO flashlights!"
I guess when politicians give you a case, you try to pick up the turd from the clean end.  ::)

I don't have any suggestions about load-outs. I used to have a vest for stuff like that but I never used it and its long gone.
I do know that a lot of heavy stuff on your belt isn't as comfy as having the same stuff on your torso.
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

My emergency kit is a 5.11 Triab pack.  I don't feel like it screams tactical but I like the Molle Panel on the inside.  I've got an IFAK, SOG Seal Pup, and an 8 mag Tuff stuff mag pouch attacked to it. I like the sling pack so I can have it set up to pull the mags out when I've got it slung around my front.

I bought some El Cheapo mag slings for the AR (about six bucks each). These are three two round pouches with a shoulder strap times three rigs. That's 168 extra rounds for the AR, plus either two more in the back pockets or two mags for the Glock. I'm up and ready in a very short period. Granted the reloads aren't going to be lightning fast, but under a goretex rain jacket you can't see them either (of course the big honking AR might be a give away ;D). If its the shotty, my range bag (thank you NRA) will carry 25 in each of the side pockets, plus the nine in the gun and five in the nylon side saddle. And there is plenty of room for mags and a spare pistol inside. But again, if you're using a long gun, subtlety has left the building. If it comes to that kind of a fight, you're either justified or not.
