Surely not some little old wild colonial boy could take on the US at its own game and win?
The fella's name is Sam Medway or Savage Sam.
He currently holds a couple world records from memory and I wouldnt be sassing his sisters none either they can shoot purdy good too.
A little about Sam: (as written by his father today)
Sam grew up on grazing property 30km’s south of Cowra. Sam didn’t watch a lot of TV or have video games but he did have a lot of rabbits and foxes to hunt and his dad was a mad keen shooter who was involved in numerous shooting disciplines with one of these being Single Action Shooting which gives you the opportunity to use rifles, pistols and shotgun in one sport.
At the age of 12 Sam competed in his very first Single Action match and won the Junior Boy category against seasoned junior boys aging 16 plus. This was the first of many wins for Sam and began his obsession with Single Action Shooting.
As would a dedicated sportsman, Sam trained most nights spending hours in a 60’ x 40’ machinery shed with paper plates stuck to the walls dry firing and wearing out firearms. After these sessions it was not unusual to find Sam covered in sweat from running up and down the shed practising scenarios.
In 2008 I took Sam and one of his sisters, Jessie-Lea, to the America where Sam and Jessie-Lea excelled. Sam won Cortez in Colorado, Junior Boys and Overall. Jessie-Lea won Junior girls and Ladies Overall.
We than went to the Word Titles in Albuquerque New Mexico there Sam won the Speed Rifle event overall which was his first World Title. He never took a backward step from then going on to win the Junior Boy World Title with a clean match and finishing 6th overall out of 1200 shooters. Jessie-Lea came 3rd in the world in Junior Girls.
From Albuquerque we travelled to Fredericksburg in Texas where Sam got to shoot against the new World Champion and won the shoot overall. Sam dominated the Junior Boy category in Australia until he reached 17 which put him into Cowboy or the open category.
Both Sam and Jessie-Lea hold world records. Sam’s records consist of Speed Shotgun (shotgun starts on table, hands off gun, on the buzzer he picks up the shotgun and loading 2 at a time only places 4 shots on target in 2.64 seconds) Speed Scenario (targets are measured in diameter and placed at measured distances 10 shots out of pistols, 5 in each on 5 targets, 10 shots out of rifle on 5 targets sweeping the targets twice with no double taps and 4 shotgun knockdown targets must go down) all in 14.34 seconds. These records are still not broken since 2008.
In 2011 Sam went back to the USA and became the Colorado State Champion. He then went to the World Titles again in Albuquerque where he missed his first 2 shots of his first stage. Had he not missed these 2 shots he would have won the World Championship. He then went on to clean the following 11 stages (not miss a shot) and placed 11th overall in the World.
In July 2012 Sam was involved in a shocking work place related accident where he nearly severed his left arm cutting all but one major tendon. We all thought this was the end of his shooting career not only did he recover but only a few weeks after having his cast removed he competed in the Australian Single Action National Championships and won overall. He has not looked back since winning this title. He went onto win the Trans Tasman (Australia V’s New Zealand) and followed this up with a win side by side with his sister Jessie-Lea as overall NSW Male and Female Champions.
We have not covered all Sam’s achievements but can say that he has won all major regional, state, and national competitions and most numerous times.
Sam has a love for the sport and respects the use and safe handling of firearm as does the rest of the family. Sam has 3 sisters that all shoot as well as myself and my partner.
To have won the World Title this year Sam not only had to overcome his injury he had to compete against a lot of other countries that have laws that permit the use of pump action shotgun which is an incredible advantage over our side by sides in the sport of Single Action Shooting.
Sam’s speed and accuracy is something to be seen to be believed a lot of critics say that the footage has been speed up and it is not possible to shoot these firearms this quick it has to be seen to be believed. Sam is a gentleman and is always keen to help or show others the sport.
Heres Sam in Action
