If you are not familiar with the Vang Comp system, it is basically a lengthening of the choke taper, allowing less "collision" of the shot as it heads downrange, resulting in a tighter shot pattern.

They also have a sires of holes drilled in the top half of the muzzle that are meant to reduce barrel rise during recoil.

I have limited experience with Vang shotguns.  I bought a Mossberg 590 from Vang with their comp system and it did have a tight pattern, but I do not know what a stock 590s pattern looks like.  Ditto with the muzzle rise.

I had a friend, who had a friend....   well, the friend of a friend was dissatisfied with the patterning of his shotgun...due to his lack of success bird hunting with my friend.  

So, the stock barrel was patterned and sent off to Vang for the Comp mod.  When they got it back, the pattern was significantly tighter.  

However, no more luck with birds was to be had.  

They did a few test to see what they could find.  One was to set up a pattering target so that it would be very easy to tip over quickly.  What they found was that the pattern had only 3/4 of the pellets of the pattern with the fixed target.

Their theory was that the lengthened taper resulted in an elongated shot string....and birds moving at speed flew out of the path of the string to quickly.

I would agree with the elongated string part, but don't know about it causing misses.

Anyway unless the bad guy is moving like a bat out of hell, I'd say this would not be a problem in home defense.
