It doesn't have to be 1952.  I graduated in 1994 and all of those 'old ways' were alive an well.  That wasn't very long ago.

We'd bring guns to school so we could hunt before or after school.  If there was a problem with our gun, we would bring it in to the shop class and the teacher would show us how to fix what was wrong with it.

If there was a fight, the teacher with the most seniority (Mr B.) would always somehow know about it and he would always show up.  He'd tell the kids to take it to the bean field across the parking lot so it wasn't on school property.  Then, he'd stick around and watch to make sure nothing got out of control.

I miss the 'old America' and like the wascally wabbit, I weep for my country.
Bravery and stupidity are often synonymous.  So are cowardice and intelligence.

"We Americans have been a rebellious band of freedom loving vagabonds from the very beginning. Our freedom from the crown and tyranny would not exist had it not been for the gun. That's a tradition we like to hold on to.  The same can't be said for the rest of you 'Subjects of the Queen'."--said to a Canadian friend who just doesn't get it.
