Pocket Drawing a Snubby......
« on: April 11, 2007, 10:57:07 AM »
Hi guys,

Anyone have special tips or advice on how to pocket draw a S&W "Chief's Special" snubby from a pocket holster.  I had been considering a Centennial hammerless model, but I couldn't resist the brand new, unfired Model 60 "no dash" from 1969 that I was fortunate enough to locate yesterday.  My thoughts are to place my thumb over the hammer and shape my hand as flat as possible against the snubby while extracting it from its holster so as not to snag my hand/knuckles or hammer against my pocket (the opposite of making a fist).  Any advice or tips from anyone who has carried this model snubby in a pocket is appreciated.  I'll be using a Robert Mika pocket holster.

Walt and Michael, your thoughts and advice on this would be especially welcomed.  Any other concerns with having a hammered snubby in the pocket?  Thanks much.

I would place my thumb "under" the hammer so as to keep the thumb just "above" the hammmer so the hammer does'nt snag on the pocket. Placing the thumb "on" the hammer makes me think you intend to cock the hammer as/after you draw.

Good point Don, I didn't think of that.  In a defensive situation you would fire in DA mode so that makes a lot of sense.  It also eliminates the inadvertent cocking of the hammer when pulling your hand out of your pocket.  Good tip....thanks.

Walt talked about keeping the thumb on the hammer. Check out the CCW videos on the site...there's one that covers the pocket draw.

BTW, when I get past the NRA Show, I've got a bunch more of the CCW series videos to finish putting together, including one on off-body carry, draw from concealment, extra ammo or no, etc.

Thanks very much Michael.  I went back and replayed Walt's video and he does say to place your thumb on top of the hammer.  It's also interesting that he feels a hammered snubby, although it can get caught up in your pocket during the draw, is also a positive in that the hammer assists in maintaining the snubby in your pocket.  It prevents it from falling out....you just need to practice covering the hammer with your thumb on the draw.

Michael, I'm really looking forward to your remaining CCW videos....they really are helpful and well done.  Thanks very much.

Mike

Is the one on drawing from concealment going to include drawing from a IWB Tuckable Holster? If not and you are not done with it it would be nice to see how I should be doing it!

Ordered a S&W Model 36 2" barrel, 38 Special in Nickel, with Rosewood grips today.  After it gets here, I'll have to determine if I will allow myself to carry it (to other than BBQ's that is).  ;)
