Intresting question,.. How many mags should you own?
« on: November 16, 2013, 05:46:35 PM »
How many mags should you own for each kind of your guns?   example, hunting rifle with a removable mag, semi auto rifle, rim fire, pistol target/sd/comp and  Anything else you can think of.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

More is always better.
Just because you're not using it now doesn't mean you won't be glad to have it when the ones you do use wear out or get lost.

For my pistols I have a minumum of 6 for each handgun and about 25 for the ar type rifles.

I'd like at least 10 for any competition gun.  More is better.  I cheat with the two Glocks since they take the same mag and I only have 12 between them.

Anything you shoot routinely a lot of mags is good.  Think about it.  Load up 10 mags for the 10/22 before you go and you don't waste time loading at the range.

since switching to the 9mm Glock platform, I don't have the maintenance problems I had with 1911 magazines, likewise switching to the PMag for the AR....I have a couple of the older AR mags loaded in the safe, but for my competition blasters, only 4 PMags and 4 Glock mags.... do you know something I should be aware of ?  ???

If I have less than 10. I get the shakes. A lot depends on how fragile, or I obtainable, they are. I've gotten "caught out" on some guns I like that went out of production and mags disappeared.

I have A LOT of AR and 1911 mags.

I tend to use the same 10 over and over and hold the others in reserve.

As Michael says, you want plenty of mags for guns that might be discontinued (say a Winchester 77 or Remington 66).

And some competitions may only require 1 or 4 magazines per stage.  Glock (GSSF), for example, only uses 3, 3 & 4 for the three stages so, yeah, 4 are enough, but by taking 10 I don't have to fuss with reloading while at the range.   I have a mag pouch for each stage ready to go.  At home, at my leisure I can check and double check to make sure each is properly loaded.  Under the heat, cold or rain at the range it's easy to make a mistake.   Same with IDPA and my revolver.  I take enough speedloaders that I don't have to worry about re-freshing any of them during a match.    It usually works out, for an indoor match to about 10.

Then lastly of course is the idea that having lots of extra mags could come in handy in some situations.  I'm not a "zombie apocalypse" person, but I can understand having plenty on hand.

.. at least one more than what you have right now. :D
I can't understand people who think banning guns makes them safer. They must also believe that banning books makes them smarter.

i don't know about the rest of you, but i am running into i have more mags them ammo!   i really need to start reloading some 45 and 10 mm.  I have less then 200 rounds of each.  Tons of primers, just been looking for a deal on bullets.
