Minivan Stop Turns to Wild Chase for Mom, Kids

Video from a police dashboard camera showed how a routine traffic stop devolved into an intense incident that involved a high speed chase and a police officer appearing to shoot at van full of children.

The incident began when Oriana Ferrell was pulled over by a New Mexico State Police officer for going 71 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone according to ABC News affiliate KRQE-TV in Albuquerque, N.M.

The dash cam shows Ferrell and the officer arguing, and when the officer goes back to his car to check paperwork, Ferrell drives away and is pulled over again by the same officer.

When the officer goes to the car a second time he opens the door and demands that Ferrell get out of the car, yelling "Get out of the vehicle right now!"

When she refuses, the officer appears to attempt to pull her out of the car as her five children, ages 6 to 18, according to The Taos News, start screaming in the car.

As the officer tries to get Ferrell to leave the car, he tells her that she is already facing charges for leaving the scene after she was first pulled over.

"Look, I'm going to ask you one more time to get out of the vehicle and then I'm going to pull you out, OK?" the officer said. "You're already facing evading charges. You ran away from me."

"Sir, I pulled back over, I didn't run away," Ferrell said. "You see my children. I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm just trying to take them to the Rio Grande."

Eventually Ferrell gets out of the car to talk to the officer, but when he tells her to turn and face the vehicle she tries to run back into the driver's seat of the car. The incident quickly escalates with Ferrell's son this time engaging the officer. Only after the officer aims his taser at the boy does he run back into the van.

As back-up arrives, Ferrell and her family are locked inside. The officer takes his baton and starts to break the windows of the van as he tries to get the family out of the car.

At that point Ferrell starts to drive away, and another officer who came on the scene later appears to fire three shots at the back of the minivan even though five children were in the back seat.

Ferrell leads the officers on a 10-minute chase before stopping in front of a hotel and turning herself in. Both Ferrell and her 14-year-old son were arrested.

The actions of the different officers and the fact that the routine traffic stop ended with an officer shooting at a car and a high speed chase has led to an internal investigation, the New Mexico State Police told ABCNews.com. However, the officers involved have not yet been removed from active duty.

Farrell was charged with five counts of abuse of a child, aggravated fleeing an officer, resisting an officer, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to The Taos News. Her teenage son was charged with battery of an officer.

The Taos News reported that New Mexico State Police said they allegedly found two marijuana pipes in the minivan.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

From the title I thought this was going to be a MILF post......sadly, no.

This was handled badly by everyone involved.

I think it was handled fine until Barney Fife took his bullet out of his pocket and started shooting at the van.

Other than that, the mom tried to run away from the cops for a traffic ticket, twice and the son attacked the cop and the media wants me to be mad at the cop?

Nope.  Not happening.
Bravery and stupidity are often synonymous.  So are cowardice and intelligence.

"We Americans have been a rebellious band of freedom loving vagabonds from the very beginning. Our freedom from the crown and tyranny would not exist had it not been for the gun. That's a tradition we like to hold on to.  The same can't be said for the rest of you 'Subjects of the Queen'."--said to a Canadian friend who just doesn't get it.

I think if the first cop went hands on faster at the second stop, the kids and everyone on the road would never have been endangered.
He seemed reluctant to actually CONTROL her when she was going to be arrested and was allowed, by his inaction, to get into the drivers seat again.
If she was checked up against the boards when she refused to put her hands behind her back she wouldn't have been able to drive away.  Dip$h!t kid who got out to assault the cop should have his ass handed to him.
When backup arrived, it really went downhill.

Ageed on the media statement...I think you and I rarely agree with media on what they want us to think.  ;)
