Taurus 185 gr. 45 ACP HP
« on: June 05, 2008, 06:00:01 PM »
Has anyone used this ammo in thier 45 ACP? My local Gun Shop has some in stock for about $15. per 20. I'm not sure who makes them for Taurus. They claim to be a 99.95% pure copper bullet, with 6 petal expansion and nearly 100% weight retention. My 5" @ 3" 1911 like 185 and 200 gr ammo. Only my 6" Long Slide likes 230 gr ammo.

Yes, I have used them and I have them loaded in my Ruger KP-97 as my defensive round.  The Bullets are made by Barnes, the case is PMC and they use Hodgdon powder.  I shot these through my KP-97 in informal testing and they produced a perfect 6-petal mushroom every time....just like the picture.  They have a deep hollowpoint, but the profile feeds well.  I chose them because with the shorter barrel KP-97, and apartment living, I wanted a round that would reliably expand over a range of velocities.  I get them from Sportsman's Guide for $14 plus shipping, so $15 is a good price.

I thought it was a Barnes bullet but I had trouble getting anymore info other than what it was advertised with. You can't beat using the Barnes bullets. I don't recall ever hearing anything bad about them. I'll give them a try. Thanks for responding to my post.

Here is all the info you will need:

http://www.handgunsmag.com/ammunition/taurus_45acp/index.html
Quote
The bullet is a Barnes XPB 185-grain JHP. The powder is from Hodgdon, and the ammunition is loaded by PMC.

Barnes says that the XPB bullet may penetrate more than 25 percent deeper than lead-core bullets of similar weight while exhibiting classic, uniform expansion with enviable weight retention. This solid-copper bullet technology is so impressive that Barnes bullets are used by Federal in some of its shotgun slug loads, as well.

Energy: 375.4 ft-lbs
Avg Velocuty: 956 ft/sec
Avg group size at 25 yds: 3.25 inch
Diameter of recovered bullet: .861 inch/190 percent
Weight of recovered bullet: 185.1 grains/100 percent

penetration: 10.75 inch

Or check out the Taurus web site:

http://www.taurususa.com/products/products-ammo-45.cfm

They have a little different ballistics

That was a good article.....now I want the .45 ACP tracker mentioned in that article!  Wonder what the date was?  Anyway, my informal testing consisted of wet phonebook, water jug, and into a marl berm.  The marl type of berm we have here in Florida is very good at plugging up hollowpoints, even the "big name" brands, but the Taurus Hex bullets still opened up like the picture from my 4.2" Ruger ( of course I had to wash all the dirt off to see it), and I had to dig down to get them out!  I have had other hollowpoints give mixed results in the "marl dirt berm" test!
