Olympic K8 or K16
« on: June 08, 2008, 12:11:10 PM »
Hello guys I need help with a decision. I have narrowed it down to 2 models. The K16 http://www.olyarms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=48&category_id=7&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=37 . Or the K8 http://www.olyarms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=35&category_id=6&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=37. There is not a huge price difference in the 2. I may shoot high power matches with it. I just don't know how much range and accuracy will I give up with the 16" barrel. Thanks for any help.

A freind of mine bought a 16 inch and then found out they are not allowed for "Service rifle " matches, Also I THINK you need the A - 1 sights. Check with some one who is already competeing in the matches you want to shoot to make sure you get the right equipment BEFORE you spend the money. He's now trying to trade what he bought for what meets the requirements, and not having very good luck unless he takes a beating on trade in value   :(

From the information I've gathered, the 16" barrel automatically puts you in match rifle class, and your 16" won't compete. I have found out that now the detachable carry handle is legal, but does not have enough elevation for 600 yards, so you have to adjust the front sight, which may not be a close enough tolerance, not to add windage changes to the overall picture. Advice on the high power forums is to an A2 style fixed sight upper, with a 20" barrel. Don't feel bad, I just built a 20" Shilen barrel upper with a detachable carry handle, barrel free floated under the handguards. LOL, I think I will just shoot it and see what happens.

As to how much you give up, 200 fps, and then it depends on the bullet weight, ballistic coefficient  and velocity versus your barrel twist rate. 16" barrels can shoot very well, but if you want to shoot high power, the extra velocity and sight radius are a plus.

Make sure your STOCK choice is acceptable as well, thats something else he got wrong . In fact he even chose the wrong sling, seems that about all he got right was 5.56   :D

Well just going by what a friend of mine said that shoots high power at the same match I will shoot the flat top and bull barrel does not matter in the high power. He said if I shoot the CMP service rifle it has to look like a stock service rifle. The high power match is a maximum of 200 yards and uses reduced targets for longer ranges. I know I cannot compete in all the different matches but I really want a flat top.
