Goin Glock, anything I should know?
« on: June 12, 2008, 05:55:01 PM »
So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a G17.  I have not been a big Glock fan (dont hurt me to bad)  but I thought that I had better get one while the gettin is good.  Found a good deal ($500) NIB,  checked it out,  like it,  goin for it!  Is there anything I should know?  Any tricks of the trade I might weasel out of you G fans?

Thanks once again all!

Yes, at that price when you don't like it you will not loose too much when you sell it.

One of my favorites, can't go wrong with a 9mm Glock in the arsenal. The stock sights do leave something to be desired but there are plenty out there and that can be said for almost all accessories for Glock in general. That all being said my experience with handguns is very minimal when compared to about 99.9% of the people on this forum.

Well, here is my 2 cents, since you asked.....

First off, I would not bother with the full size Glock in 9mm (Although the G17 is a damn fine gun). If you are looking for a full size Glock, get the .45

In my opinion, the full size Glock is not very concealable and because of this fact, my G17 has been designated to "night stand only" work (and for that role, I would much prefer it to be in .45). The compact and subcompact Glocks are much more versatile, and make for more practical concealed carry guns. So if you have a CWP, or ever think you might want to get one, then I would think long and hard about getting the subcompact - The G26 is a great carry gun, and 10+1 rounds of 9mm is more then enough firepower for concealed carry. They are just as accurate and shootable as the big boys, and you can get a finger extension for the mag if your hands are too big.

I would also recommend getting one of the uber-high capacity mags for which ever Glock you choose. My G17 is ready to engage the bad guys with a 33rd mag - and you can also get them for the .40 or.45 Glocks. It is also important to note that all of the compact and sub compact Glocks will take their larger counter parts mags as well (so I can even use the 33 rd mag or the 17 rd mag in my sub compact G26  :)). Oh, and they are fun as hell to rip through at the range!

Lastly.... I would not rule out buying a used Glock. I bought my G17 used from a gun store for about $250 a few years back.... It had a great deal of finish that had been worn away on the slide, but I sent it back to the factory and had it refinished for about $40. Now it looks as good as a new Glock and it has always run like a clock. So my point here is that most of the used Glocks out there are pretty much as mechanically perfect as a new one, and if you look hard enough I know that you can find them for a much lower price (probably around $350-$400).

What would be your primary use for the G17?  I have had a G17 for 16 years and it is still one of my favorite guns (one smokestack jam is the only failure Ive ever had with it) and works like a champ.  If you do want to conceal it then get a G19 for a good all around gun.  I have a 17, 19, and 26 and I like the 19 because it is the best all around gun.  Im not a die hard Glock fan but they work (the smokestack was due to cheap reloads and a weak 13 year old's wrist) and I just am partial to guns that go bang everytime.  $500 is reasonable so dont worry about that.

I have a G23 and the wife has a G17 that I use for USPSA and IDPA matches.  The compact (19,23) size fits people's hands a little better but the 17 shoots a little better.  For CCW the 26 is a good choice but be aware the recoil is a little stiff and the 27 is much worse.  I replaced the 23s sights fairly soon after I bought it with MMC night sights and recently replaced both gun's with Warren Tactical sights (the 23 got two dot night and the 17 got a fiber front).  I don't like the 20/21 frame, its to wide.  The 21SF is much better.  For a hide gun in 45 the 36 is a good choice but is the same capacity as a 1911 3.5in barrel (Para PDA, Springfield EMP) and the 30 is to fat to hide very well.

I have a box full of holsters (leahter and plastic/kydex) and have relied on a Blackhawk Serpa or a Galco 3-slot holster for a few years.  I recently got a G-Code set and Blade-Tech IWB that I've been playing with and pretty happy.

As for price, $500 is about right.  Here at the police supply they are $464 and the LGS is about $540.  Gunbroker has a few lower but they are used and with transfer and shipping would be about that anyway.

It isn't too picky about cleaning and lube but it's pretty easy to disassemble/clean.  Replace the springs every few years and it'll run forever (my G23 is about 13 years old).  My only significant failure with either was an extractor that got blown out by a bad "factory reload."
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

For CCW the 26 is a good choice but be aware the recoil is a little stiff and the 27 is much worse.

I would actually disagree. My 26 is a joy to shoot, and recoil is hardly even noticeable.....  My wife even loves to shoot it.
