Oops. 9mm in a .40SW gun
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:05:26 PM »
Found this brass at the range yesterday.  (A banner day, btw.  Fired about 400 rounds myself, but with everybody else giving me their brass I came home with almost 1,000 brass.)

I think I tried this, too.   The extractor is strong enough to hold the round against the breech.  And considering the 9mm bullet doesn't allow pressure to build up the worst case is the slide doesn't operate and there's lots of spitzen and sparken out the barrel.

Somebody must have been experimenting cause I only found 4 rounds.

I can see a hand full of 9mm brass in getting into your .40 brass while reloading.

Sizing die would have no effect but the expander would bell the case so the bullet would fit...if it didn't split the case.

Both  use small primers, so that wouldn't be a problem, but I imagine a hot .40 S&W load might cause some problems.

Since a .357SIG is  .40S&W brass necked down to .355,  maybe this is really a .40SIG.  a 9mm necked up.  (tongue in cheek folks.)

On further reflection, I like your Shutzemdeader AE designation better.

FWIW... a 38 super fired in a .45 makes little sheets of brass, that look really funny coming out of your friend's pistol...

My big worry is firing .44 Magnum in a .45 Colt. The rim diameter is only two thousandths difference so the .44 would fit nicely in my .45 Contender barrels with the rim holding it in the center.

Jumbo, having done exactly what you are afraid of doing, it turned out ok for me. I have a s&w m25 in 45 colt and a m29 in 44 mag. I had taken them out with me and had both on the bench with ammo in plastic cases. I wound up putting the 44 ammo in the 45 colt and firing one round.
The recoil wasn't right from what i expected so i checked the gun and the 44 round had expanded and split at the mouth,  but other than that the gun was ok. The 44 round was a 240 gr swc at about 1200 fps out of the m29 (6.5 inches) m25 was 4 inches. I no longer take both of them with me at the same time when shooting.

This got me to thinking....   The .44 bullet is .023 undersized in a .45 Colt...so pressure would not be as great once the bullet started moving (inertia being overcome)..  I know accuracy and any long range performance would be garbage due to no, or very minimal,  stabilization by the rifling, but I wonder if muzzle velocity would be higher without the drag going down the barrel?

I don't suppose you want to do it again with a chrono?   ;D ;D
