FBI chief: Gun ruling makes campuses less secure

If he doesn't think he can protect Second Amendment civil rights, then Mueller should step down. He took an oath to protect the Constitution, afterall.

HARTFORD, Conn. - Last week's landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld a constitutional right to own guns for self-defense and hunting may harm efforts to deter violent crime in communities and college campuses, FBI Director Robert Mueller said Monday.

Speaking at a convention of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators in Hartford, Mueller criticized the ruling, which he said "does throw a lot of things up in the air."

Last year, a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in the nation's worst mass shooting in modern history, prompting some states to consider new laws to tighten campus security. Earlier this year, a gunman killed five people at Northern Illinois University.

By a 5-4 vote last week, the nation's highest court struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns, the first major pronouncement on gun rights in history. It upheld the right for communities to license guns.

Mueller said communities will have to determine their own license programs. As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."

With his grandchildren going to college, Mueller said he hopes "those campuses will be weapons free."

Mueller said the FBI's top priority remains counterterrorism, counter- intelligence and protecting the secrets of the United States.

He said college campuses and small communities could be "potential incubators of terrorism" even while major cities such as New York and Los Angeles remain primary targets for terrorists.

"The fact is we can't rule out any community in the United States as a potential incubator of terrorism," Mueller said.

If so, I can understand why this guy thinks folks harm themselves with guns.

Which has exactly what to do with American citizens going about their daily lives and taking advantage of a prior, existing right, codified by the constitution?  Add to the fact that most states only issue concealed carry after a lengthy process that includes instruction and a background check.

Haz, the problem is all these guys know that they have only a couple of months left. So there is no longer any pretense at all of loyalty, integrity etc...These are their true colors. McClelland, Mueller et al.

It seems like they have been regularly embarrassing every adult that voted for them. Do they take pride is this?

I just know that when I vote for McCain I will be similarly disappointed. Please just give me a couple of months honeymoon Senator !!!

Typical "Head in the sand or wherever" attitude.  We will keep hearing this because they will never believe any opinion about the 2nd amendment and self defense but their own or someone who agrees with them.  I go to church and believe "God helps those who help themselves" and was a Boy Scout who believed "Be Prepared" that's why I got my CCW and a cell phone and hope to be around after the fight to dial 911.

That's what you get when you appoint someone to head the FBI, who's never been a cop.  He's never even been a Special Agent, for that matter.  I respect his Vietnam service, but there is no comparison between that war, any war, and American society.  Because he saw people killed with firearms in Nam, it is beyond the pale to compare that to guns on campus. 

Any veteran cop who is being honest, will agree that citizens are on their own for self defense.  Sure, the police will get there as fast as possible and try their best to identify, find and prosecute the killer, but they can do nothing to prevent your death. 

When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

+1  Respect the man's service in the military and DOJ but he sounds a little off with his comments on self defense. 

I can kind of understand where he is coming from.  My late father was LE for 32 years in So. Cal.  He never could understand my fascination of firearms because he hated them.  Had he a wish, it would have been to drop all of them in the ocean.  HOWEVER ... he also realized that such a utopia will never exist and the bad guy/gal will have a weapon so people NEED to defend themselves with guns.
