Ksail!,

Post what you want.  Don't go all sulky on us.  Hell, I know I irritate some people with my flippant remarks, that's not gonna stop me.

Free men, remember?  Post what ya want, we are free to (and comment) or not.  And you know I'm your friend so take what I'm about to say in the spirit it is said. MAN UP!  Screw the comments that disparage you, they do not and you should not let them, define you, your actions or beliefs.

ksail,
    I found myself in a situation almost 15 years ago where I found two individuals approaching my truck at an intersection. This was right after the CCW law first passed in NC, so my pistol(s) were carried on the front seat in plain sight. Luckily I was aware enough to see them before they got too close, and the pistol's presence changed 'thug's' mind without any altercation. Thank God!
...anyway, from my experience, I think it might be useful to have a second handgun immediately accessible(not neccessarily in plain sight) while driving. Personally I like the idea of the same platform, such as two 1911's or two Glocks, or two whatever. What you mention that you already have would work just as well, just so there is one on you and one close at hand in the car.
   Might just simplify the matter a little anyway!

Now after thinking about this, I need to go see what I can thin out to get another Springfield! Dang it!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

I have spent some time driving in bad neighborhoods (and I don't have a lightbar  ;D) and thinking about how I would handle a situation that involved force.  One of the first things I realized is that while it won't stop a bullet, the car does give me opportunity for surprise mobility, so I am careful to leave some room in front of me, and assessing my options in other directions.  I also realize that being aware is critical ingredient, and that alone saved me a couple of times.  But after much consideration, I keep a gun in the car between the seat and the drive tunnel, nothing expensive that it would bother me to lose (lost one once when the car was stolen), a revolver in .357, effective caliber, and no ejected cartdridges to distrat me, particularly if driving.  If I go to get it, I am somewhat bent over, a move that would not be unlikely in the event of a threat through the window, and some chance of surprise on the rebound.  Never had to use it, but it did change some minds on one particular occasion

Keep up the posts, Ksail.  I, for one, have been forced to evaluate the way in which I would handle certain situation because of the thought you have already put into it.  Hopefully I will never have to put any of these things into practice, but if so, you may have helped save my life or those of my loved ones.  Thanks!

In my previous life as a federal officer, I traveled all over the country by vehicle.  Fortunately never had a problem where I had to draw my weapon while in a vehicle.  What I did learn is that a person has to be aware of what is going on around him, 360 degrees all the time.  Always looking at where you stop and stopping in such a manner, if you can, that helps you get out of there.  Look for options whether to go foward, left, right or rear if you have to.  Always formulate a plan.  If all options are closed then how to draw and bring your weapon in play, whether to your left or right side.  I used shoulder holsters, on the belt and inside the pants clipped to the belt.  For me the high-rise, right-hand belt holster worked best.  Our issue weapon was a S&W Model 19 with 2 1/2" barrel.  Guess since I know it so well, still my preferred carry pistol.  Unfortunately, my son also likes it so he has it, can't say no, so now my second choice, 1911.

Ksail, great post, please keep them coming.  My vote would be for you to keep posting, not PM's, the sharing of opinions is what makes a forum work.  If you decide to PM, please put me on your list.
My wife and I are contractors, and since most of our day is in someone's home, carrying is not an option.  I'm also left handed, and that's another problem in a vehicle.  I've been looking at off body carry, combining it with some sort of mini BOB (bug out bag).
I've tried soft briefcases, different kinds of bags, and backpacks.  Nothing seems to work for me.  What I'm looking for is something with lots of pockets so I'm not just dumping a lot of stuff into a big bag.  Also a separate pocket for the gun, and can be carried like both a briefcase or backpack.
Since my truck is a full size van, taking the gun out and putting it into a IWB holster unseen is not a problem, and the ability to pull the gun out of a bag with my right hand is a real plus.
One embarrassing story;
I was doing a lot of wheelchair ramps in the inner city, and had an aluminum clipboard with a compartment for storing forms.  I decided that compartment would be a great place for a gun.  I cut out the profile in wood, and lined it with felt (glued in place).  After allowing the glue to dry a day, I put my Colt 10mm Delta Elite in it.  A couple of days later, I opened the case and there was my beautiful gun all rusted up.  Apparently the glue hadn't completely dried.
Anyway, I think off body carry is something we all might have a use for, if we could find a way to do it.  Maybe a "manbag" (just kidding, I got enough comments about my choice of text colors in the chat room ;D)
Thanks again,
Art
