I have been involved with the VA (as a patient) for more years than I'd care to admit. And contrary to the reports of many others, I have enjoyed superlative treatment. Of course, it should be noted that I use the C.W. "Bill" Young Bay Pines Veterans Hospital. Bill Young, our long time congresscritter, was a true champion for veterans' rights, and his wife, Beverly, was indefatigable in her pursuit of nothing but the best for Florida vets.
I now sport two after-market hips that still work better than the ones I got from God--even after 10 years or more on the first one and 8 or 9 on number 2.
Last year around this time I discovered I had a hiatal hernia. Better than 80% of my stomach had taken up residence north of my diaphragm and was pressing against my heart. The VA got me in for surgery within a week after discovery. Can't fault that kind of speed.
When I needed new glasses, I got my eye exam scheduled within 3 weeks to a month of my request and my new specs came in the mail 8 days later.
I should also note that when I was visiting my folks in Mesa, AZ, I discovered I had picked up a tapeworm while teaching English in Thailand. Don't ask how I know, but believe me when I say I had absolute confirmation it was a tapeworm. I wanted/needed treatment, so I went to the infamous Phoenix VA.
They couldn't find any record of my ever being in the VA system. My government issued VA identification card couldn't be read on their computer system (or so they said) so I was denied treatment. Ended up with a $150 per visit doc-in-the-box and a $200 prescription. Had I been back home in Florida, I have no doubt I would have been treated immediately.
So, I guess what I am saying is this:It depends on where you live what kind of service the VA will provide.
That some of my brothers have died waiting for care from their local VA is beyond the pale. Those responsible should be brought up on murder charges. But it is also important to realize that this is a precursor of what's coming under OdamnaCare. Rationed care is an inevitability.
I would also note that C.W. "Bill" Young was a lifelong Republican. His successor is David Jolly, likewise, a Republican. The majority (if not all) of the areas wherein suspect VA facilities are located are predominantly Democrat.
