Fire Ant English

True story.
Just when I have read enough about the illegal immigration flood to give me a pounding headache, something happens to remind me of the saying, "nothing is as good as it seems and nothing is as bad as it seems."

I live in the country on a piece of property that was partially taken (eminent domain) for a water treatment plant. Crews of Mexicans comprise most of the pipe laying labor and they speak no English. As the pipe trench,10' deep, 10 ' wide, made it's way through my property, the crew found themselves beneath one of my pecan trees at noon break. I had found, but not yet treated, a new mound of fire ants at the base of the tree that morning. As I walked by the group resting in the shade, I pointed to the base of the tree and said "fire ants!". They all smiled, waved and said "Si, Si, Gracias" ... No idea what I said.

Five minutes later all hell broke loose and they were scrambling to get the garden hose working to wet down a bunch of semi-nude foreigners. Shoes, pants, hard hats everywhere but on their persons.

The next day I walked by where they were digging, still by the pecan tree. I pointed to the base of the tree, and they ALL hollered "FIRE ANTS ! ". I smiled, shook my head up and down, and privately admired my language teaching skills.

Necessity and survival may solve the "Press 1 for English" situation, where fences and politicians have failed. I'll give it a little longer anyway.

Mac.

Object lessons are usually the best.
The person who has nothing for which his is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
- J.S. Mill

Muchos Gracias Amigo!!  Mui Bein... :P
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
