Ok..so how to you get a 'pipe' to extrude through the die?

Can't figure out how the center is supported?

Only way I can think of is retractable supports that are retracted just ahead of the billet as it moves through the die?

And then put back behind the billet.

Our biggest press pushed 2500 tons on a 9" billet. That's a lot of force. The friction causes the already hot billet to temporarily liquefy while being pressed through the 2-piece die set. Like in the photo below, the billet contacts the side with the 4 triangular holes and flows to the output side with the round shape, flowing around a center mandrel creating a pipe or tube.

Cool,
Here's a video of the kind of machines I've been running

Tom, we used the CNC and EDM machines to make our die sets.

One of the video's at Youtube was of a machine I have actually run (that brand and model ) roughing a die, but it was for a press, not extrusion. Also I thought the engine block would be more interesting to the Gear heads here.  ;D
EDM is cool, We used them the last place I worked, extreme accuracy, and small complex shapes, but it is a relitively slow process and they are a SOB to get adjusted if you are trying to run a variety of different parts, not only do you have to get the right voltage to minimize slag/burr, but wire diameter, composition, tension and speed are also variables that need to be balanced. then the first roll of wire runs out and you have to adjust for minor variations in the next one.
All the EDM guys I know drink, a lot  ;D

Got it.  Like passing a thread through an ice cube and leaving the ice cube intact.

Thanks, Peg.  It's good to know how stuff works.....
