Going Green
« on: June 06, 2014, 05:06:49 PM »
I've actually experimented over the years with various electrical vehicles, seeing as how electronics is my hobby, but this was a big jump.

I'm now a Nissan LEAF owner.  All electric.

Well, yes there are two of them in the picture.  One belongs to my youngest son.

Okay, it's not that I've gone over to PETA or Greenpeace or anything.

In Georgia, there is a $5,000 rebate for buying (OR LEASING) an all electric vehicle.  So I did the math:

$270/mo lease minus the $209/mo state rebate ($5,000/24mo) means I'm paying only $61/mo.  I'm saving somewhere around $100/mo in gas.  THE CAR IS MAKING ME MONEY.   It's fun to drive.  Has lots of pep and pickup.   I've not seen any real change in my electric bill.  And the more I drive the more money I'm making.  My son, btw, is saving around $150/mo because he has a much longer daily commute.

Besides saving money, I don't have to replace my aging PU which I use once or twice a month now to go to Home Depot.  No oil changes.  No emission inspection.    At the end of 2 years I turn it in so I don't have to deal with decaying battery replacement.

[To relate it to shooting:] My shooting bags fit quite nicely in the back compartment.  And the more I save on gas the more I can spend on ammo.

Oh there was this little incident last week, here in Atlanta.

CALM DOWN:  It wasn't my Leaf, though it's identical to mine.  Driver survived.  I guess the tree took exception to the "leaf".

well, Nothing is free.

you are saving the money, but somebody's taxes are going to give you that savings...

Not that is isn't a smart thing to do...you not gonna beat this system in two years, so might as well join them while it pays.

Hey Alf, have you tried using your new leaf to take a rifle to the range ?  ;D
Might fit an AR in it, but not a longer barreled rifle or shotgun .

Alf...

Just wondering.  Was that a rebate or a tax credit?

Alf, what's the range on a full charge?

A coworker was looking at the early electric cars but they couldn't get him to work and back home so he drove a little shitbox mileage master.  ;)
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

Sorry, been off line a couple of days.

Full charge says 90miles, but after you turn on the a/c and run for a while I'd say 70 is more realistic.  The computer is guessing based on the consumption at any given time.  More hills, more acceleration, more accessories, the millage drops.

Have a friend who takes her's from ATL to Huntsville.  Stops at 2 dealers on the way to recharge.  Definitely not a car you take on a trip.

The rebate is a TAX Credit. The amount you get back is limited to your GA Income Tax.  It does roll over for 5 years though.  Low/no income people of course, can't use it and retired folks might take a couple of years to get everything back.

I carried an 8' uni-strut from HD to work the other day.  Granted, my rifle cases aren't going crosswise in the car, but then I can fold down the rear seats.

Wow, I didn't think the whole car was that long .     ;D

Just ran across this.

More Smart Cars Tipped in Overnight Pranks in San Francisco's Twin Peaks, Cole Valley

Two more Smart cars were tipped overnight in San Francisco's Twin Peaks and Cole Valley neighborhoods, according to police.

The latest tippings of the small two-seat cars were reported at 3:41 a.m. at Clayton Street and Parnassus Avenue and at 5:38 a.m. in the 1300 block of Clayton Street, near 17th Street, according to police.

These incident follow a series of tippings reported about two months ago.

Three Smart cars were tipped early one morning in April within a 10-block radius near Bernal Heights.

The prank is considered felony vandalism, according to police.

The cars were first made by German auto manufacturer Smart Automobile in the late 1990s.

The tipping prank is fairly common because the roughly 1,600-pound cars are more easily tipped onto their sides, roofs or ends than other vehicles.

So it IS your money. Any thing you can get back from the TAXMAN is fair game.

When someone asked me if I didn't feel bad being so aggressive working to get every cent I could off my tax bill I told them.

If you came home and found a pickup truck with 25% if your belongings in it, just how bad would you feel grabbing your TV set out of it as it pulled away from the curb?
