Back in the game
« on: August 01, 2008, 08:46:03 PM »
Now that I'm competing again, I find my class, has fewer shooters, ( AA open revolver, Optical sight.) So I think I need to make a change. Tonight  I'm  buying a 5 1/2"  Performance Center 627 PC 8 shot revolver to complement my 7 1/2" 627 PC, I will remove the red dot from the long barrel and put it on the short barrel.  Install a fiber optic front sight on the long barrel so my older eyes can pick  it up.  Now I can shoot open and limited. I don't shoot Idpa, and if I did, I would use the Glock 34, or 17, it amazes me that in the beginning you could use a 5" 625, .45 acp revolver and do well, but they changed the rules and it has to be a 4" or less, and even though now you can get the 627 pro, 8 shot, a production revolver, they will only allow 6 shots. Hmm, the leader makes his living with 1911 pistols, smells like fish bait.

This is why my club does no longer support Uspsa, Ipsc, and never did support Idpa. Too many dues to an organization that has nothing and I mean nothing to do with the support of your club.

Always follow the money.

Sorry for the rant, old feelings welling up as I type.

Are these the type of things you were referring to in your post about fun ?

No Tom, My home club went through a very long problem with what I will describe as a club within a club, in all fairness I will not name, names or organizations. But We allowed certain groups to  use our club, who were bonafided organizations, that a lot of our members belonged to.  Most of our competitions were NRA sanctioned and they require no payback. But others do, for some it's called mission count, a contribution to fund the national championship, as part of the match fee, + a non member fee, to the organization. Long story short, they got a lot of money, returned very little to the club and basically had match winner prizes given out, so that the net result back to to the club was zilch. I ran a small match that would have 10 - 12 shooters that gave back more money than a match that had 40 participants. We run a not for profit club, sub chapter S, range, but We do have expenses, and even my 5 bucks per person match turned in 50---60 dollars to the till per month, not so with some other big time guys.

In the end, We booted them, and then they went to other clubs and were booted.

The Board of directors became very leery of letting other organizations nose under our tent.

m25 I know where you are coming from (but I don't necessarily agree).  I helped to start 3 clubs...one was a club within a club.  That club (we paid to USPSA HQ) had the most active participants and had the most active helpers during special days (range clean-ups and such) and added more money to the treasury than all the rest combined.  We were forced out!  Since then that club has moved and reorganized twice and switched to IDPA.

It has been said many times "support our sponsors" and I believe in that...I also believe in support the parent organization.  As for the limitations on weapons, as the name implies International DEFENSIVE Pistol Association.  The rules have been modified (over time) to reflect the mission and the industy has responded.  There were very few 4" revolvers (625, 610 etc) around so S&W came out with them.  They are more suitable for CC than 5"+ revolvers and people say they actually carry this and other types of revolver.  I do not agree that 4"/5" carry comp type weapons should be banned but they are (some very good ones built by the "leader").  I know several of the founders of IDPA (and USPSA) and am sure they are in total agreement with the rules and would not let the "leader" ramrod them thru.

I believe you are on the best path (for your group).  I just wish my old club had their range again because we started much the same way you are going now and it was loads of fun and we could do lots of different (non-IDPA/USPSA stuff).

I'm not involved in competition, or a "club" per se, I pay my annual membership at the range and get up there to shoot when I can (It is a "for profit" operation) But it seems reasonable that if a group is using your NOT for profit range for their matches that they should be willing to contribute to the upkeep and improvement of that range. I can also see where bad experience would leave a bad taste with the Board of Directors.

Ellis4538, in our case I do believe it was the local and area leadership that was responsible, after many long hours and argument, it was always our club that needed to change, not them. Our club was founded in 1929, and has been active ever since, I feel We must be doing something right.  I also know other parts of the country did not have problems like We had with this organization.

Well off to Wally world for some .22's and some batteries for the red dots. I want to start slicking up the new 627 PC, but it was 95 degrees at 11am, supposed to top 105 before it's over, and that's for the next 3 days. It's going to be smoking in my shop.
I'm just glad there are no matches this weekend.
