ICORE Southern Regionals

I was thinking (dreaming - big time), that I'd wait until I won, before I posted anything about this.

I'm off to the Southern Regional ICORE match in Jackson, MS.  Miss Kitty and I are leaving on Friday for a leisurely stroll across Alabama to Jackson.  (Did I ever tell you how much Georgian's appreciate Alabama?   If it weren't for Alabama, we'd be a border state with Misssissippi!)

Match is Saturday morning.    My goals are to have the fewest penalty points of any competitor in my class. (I'm shooting Classic - 6 shots, iron sights, speedloaders only.)   AND to meet Jerry Michlek and family.   I don't know if he's coming or not.  He didn't come to the last International Revolver Championship, so I'm hoping that S&W will at least have him come to the Southern Regional.

Now if I'm dreaming R-E-A-L-L-Y  B-I-G, then I'd not only get my picture took with Jerry, but he'd invite Miss Kitty and I back to LA for a visit.   We have the whole week open, just in case.  (For a small fee I'll tell you what I'm smoking.)

Here's what I learned so far.   Don't wait until 4 days before you leave to order your "company colors".  I just ordered two S&W t-shirts, but they won't get here until next week. ;(

On the plus side, I've got all my ammo loaded.   I'm taking two backup guns and backup ammo.  I've been practicing my reloads with .38SC a whole lot.  Shot the postal match this past Saturday (twice) and only had one reload malfunction.  I just dumped the remaining chambers and reloaded a 2nd time.

Don't stay up late watching the news for results, but I'll try to post some things as we go along this weekend.

I really like Classic class, and next year in Morro Bay I will be 100% wired down!

The Miculeks are a CLASS ACT. I am so excited about the new show with them. I had a really good NSSF Rimfire match with the Apex .22 revolver. Here's something weird...about the 3rd stage into a 10 stage match, it struck me that I was no longer thinking that I was shooting a "revolver," but was just rolling the trigger and hitting the targets.

Accuracy wise I shot well.  My times were pretty slow.  Only celebrity there (besides me ) was Chris who's on the rules board of icore.  Good shooter. Master Limited class. Shot same scores as me only twice as fast.  Only about 50 shooters. Great weather.  Nice range.  Magnolia rifle & pistol in Jackson, ms.

(Wife and I took some time to tour Mississippi and just got home.  I hate typing on the iPad, so sorry for the delayed report.  We toured Gulfport MS and took us awhile to realize that all the Gulf front property for sale, use to have buildings on them.  Sad how much Katrina took out.  On the plus side the place looks very clean and they've come a long way in revitalizing it.)

Here are the "CLASSIC" scores.  (If you want all the sordid details, got to Icore.org)   While I went into the match Unclassified, I shot at the "B" level.  Cool, cause on the actual Classifier stage, I score a "D" level.  I was top Unclassifed Classic shooter (the only one).  And actually if I had been "D" class I would have beat out the other three.

My scores were really good, it's just that my time was r-e-a-l-l-y slow.  But then my goal was to be the most accurate in Classic division.  Not sure I made it because GM Roger Reid,  really super nice guy and was on my squad, did some impressive shooting as well.   Here's what I have.  ICORE scores by adding 1/2 second per point down.  B is 1 point down, C is 2 and Misses or NSs are 5.

Now the long boring chronology of events:

Went over on Friday, 6 hour drive.  Took our time, stopped in Tuscaoulsa and did some shopping.   Got plenty of rest Friday night.  My only concern was I had no match information and the MD didn't return my last email.  So I drove down to the range at 7am, since that was the time listed on the ICORE web site.  Naturally the match didn't start till 9am so my worries were for naught.

Magnolia RP range is only 8 miles south of Jackson (I-20) and is a beautiful range.  Nicely done.  I'd love to be able to shoot there every day.  They kept apologizing for the mud, but it wasn't bad at all.  They had lots of grass covering most of the stages.

I signed in and got my t-shirt and Course of Fire (COF) booklet.  I tried to nap in the car but after looking at the COF I felt so tiny and so out of my league, I couldn't nap.  I was intimidated by the Texas Star and the Polish Plate stages.  There were only 46 shooters.  I was a little disappointed it wasn't bigger with sponsor tables and prize giveaways, but I have to remember this is ICORE.  It's not a big discipline. 

Got my squad assignment and we went to our stage.  11 in my squad.  Nice folks.  And btw, all very accurate shooters.  Also, ICORE has got a lot of "seniors", naturally, so I wasn't anything unique on that score.     Chris Comer is THE Rules Director for ICORE was on my squad.  Nice guy, master shooter and very interesting to talk with about the rules.   Also why the IRC is trying to move. 

Our first stage was 3 and everyone was complementing my accuracy.  What a rush to have a master shooter ask if I shoot Bianchi.     We decided to shoot through 6 stage and chrono before we broke for lunch at 1pm.  (Chrono'd my .38SCs at 133 btw.)   They served Chicken Premivera!  Kudos to the range chief.   Then we finished the last two (1 & 2) stages.  Out by 2:30. 

It was great to observe the other shooters and to be around such talent.  A long drive, but the Orlando group drove 12 hours, so I can't complain.

Oh the Texas Star was fixed, not spinning, but it was a limited round count.  5 plates, 5 shots.  The Polish Plate rack was 5 plates and took me 10 shots.  I got a little rattled, but it was my first time.  There were two very quick clam shells.  Aced both, phewwww.

One side note on style.  There was one target on one stage that was only 2 feet from the portal.  TWO FEET.  I watched almost everybody take aimed shots at it.  This was coming off a reload for everybody.  I reloaded and brought the gun up only as high as necessary to clear the portal and  did a point and shoot and obviously got 2 A's.   I attribute it to Gabe, my reading on technique and on the speed drills when I practice.  It was the one and only target I figured I out shoot everybody else on.

Looking forward to my next ICORE.   I may even get back to the local IDPA matches this week.

Nice shooting Alf!  Couple hints on the star and PPR.  On the star when it is free to spin shoot the uppermost plate first and next.  In other words always shoot the highest plate.  Never a lower plate!  On the PPR shoot plate 2,3,4,6,7,8,1,5.  By doing this it will hopefully stay in balance and not spin.

I was saved from worry on the Star since it didn't rotate, but we were limited to 5 shots for the 5 plates and had to contend with barrels in the way.

On the PPR they only put 5 white plates and 1 black plate on the beam.  The black one was for balance and didn't count towards score.  So we only had plates 1, 2, 6, 7, 8.  3 being the black.  I was second to shoot on that stage so didn't have much of  a chance to figure it out.

I'm at a point in my life where I need an outdoor range with plates that I can practice.

Here's the only pictures I took.

Yes there was a bowling pin.  The gamers went slightly nuts since it's "non-standard".   They were worried whether it would be a "range malfunction" if they hit it and it didn't fall off the stand as required by COF.  Finally someone with a cool head said that we'd cross that bridge when we came to it.  Of course, if you ever shot bowling pins, you know that if it doesn't fall you just shoot it again.   Evidently, it "fell" for everybody.
