686 all dolled up
« on: November 03, 2014, 12:05:54 PM »
So from this summer's auctions I ended up with three Pro Series revolvers.  A 3" 60, a 4"686 and a 5" 686+.
All the rest were sold off and funds used for other things (posts coming soon).

Here's the new family.

You'll notice the 7 shot cylinder by the 5" 686, that's now a 6 shot.    While I had the cylinder converted (the gunsmith could do it cheaper because of his commercial discount on the new cylinder) I also had the hammer replaced with a spurless, light weight job, and all the springs changed out.

I asked the smith to leave the pull a little heavy, so he says it's a 8 pounds.   Wish I had a scale, cause if I don't think it's over 6.   Several people have dry fired it and believe it's well below 8.  It is a great DA pull.  Makes Glocks seem heavy and rough.

The smith checked it out with a variety of ammo with no failure-to-fire.   I'll be shooting Federal primers only, so light strikes shouldn't be a problem

The new cylinder is shiny and I didn't want to pay extra to have it bead blasted.  It's not a bad, two-tone look anyway.  Besides after about 500 rounds it'll look like the 4" does now.  Only change now is to try different front sights.   I have FO ones on order and may even try a gold bead at some point.   Range time with today or tomorrow, I hope.

Where's the like button?  You might want to look at the Weigand rear sight blade for the S&W.  Gives you a nice flat blade and an excellent sight picture.

Enjoy,

That's a nice looking family.

I like the contrast between the satin and polish.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

I've put FO sights on both the 4" and 5" as well as put reduced springs in the 4".   Took the 5" to the range, no light strikes problems (all Fed primers).  Shoots very nicely.  Can't wait to take the 4" out now.  Maybe, maybe even, I'll get to an indoor competition next week with it.

One more mod to the 4".  Since I now have a spare hammer, I'm going to cut/grind off the spur and see how that does in it.   May do the cutting tomorrow, we have have a horizontal band saw at work.  Got to go slow and keep it cool so as not to affect the temper.
