The off-grid controller that fails when the power goes out...
« on: January 27, 2015, 11:24:22 PM »
I meant to post this comment closer to the actual podcast, so it might be a little fuzzy on firm details, but, as I remember:

1: you have a system-critical controller in your house that works acceptably on house power
2: when the power fails, this device must be removed from the wall power, batteries inserted, and then it functions again
3: when power is restored you take out the batteries, plug it back into the mains

To save all that effort, have you considered plugging the device into a battery backup UPS? If this device is as I imagine, one of the larger 1500W desktop models should power it a good long time, and you'd never have to unplug it.

Something like this would be my suggestion: APC isn't cheap, but it's usually worth the $.

Not sure what kind of "controller" you're talking about, but yeah a UPS unit would save you lots of time and keep things running smoothly.   Only in a prolonged blackout would you need to revert to batteries.

However, I suggest Tripp Lite over APC or other "consumer" brands you typically find at Micro Center or big box stores.    Tripp Lite has a 2 year warranty (3 if you register them).    I've had 6 of them in place over the last 4 years and only had one fail.   It was within warranty and I got a free replacement.

I don't recall the type of controller either, it had something to do with his heating system if I remember right.

Trip Light is also a very good brand. I was a professional computer geek for many years, and had good performance from both companies, as long as you avoid their low end gear...
