AR Supply
« on: August 08, 2008, 09:02:31 PM »
Does anyone know what is happening with the supply of AR's?

I have talked to a couple dealers, and they told me they are very slow coming from most mfgs.  I've looked at a few on their web sites and find that many are talking delays for shipment.  Today I went to DPMS site and all the uppers and completes I was interested, plus almost everything else, says six months for shipment.  I did not call JP, but last winter when I talked to them they were talking over six months, however I just chalked that up to the amount of custom stuff they do.

Is this happening everywhere, or is it just certain companies?

I'd like to pick up a .308 with an extra upper, and a couple of uppers for my .223/5.56, but I am not known for my patience when I buy guns.

I suspect the war effort is just driving these manufacturers at 110%. From a money perspective it is a once in a lifetime oppty. There are contracts out there for the US military and foreign nations (besides LE) that are just huge. They are going to take precedence over civilian shipments.

That's what I have heard as well.  Check AR15.com and you can usually find a ready resource there.

M58, I'ver never bought frome these guys, but they always seem to be well stocked at the Texas gun shows.  Might be worth checking out if you haven't used them before...

With a name like Defense Procurement Manufacturing Service, I guess they're manufacturing for defense service procurement now.  ;D Don't you hate wiseguys?

BARAK OBAMA !!!

I ordered a RRA 6.8 back in the early part of March, it may finally be showing up in the next three weeks. Wilson makes the barrels for RRA, and supposedly wilson was not getting the high quality steel they desired. They now have barrels, but not a flash supressor for my rifle.

I checked around and ordered a Stag 2T, what a beautiful piece of machinery !!

It's as simple as Supply and Demand.

AR Demand is tremendous right now.  Raw material supply is tight, machine time is tight, and a manufacturer cannot double or triple their production and raw material procurement overnight.

The vast majority of all domestic military orders are via contracts with Colt Defense and FN.  However, overseas orders do come to domestic manufacturers from time to time that back up their production.  Another factor to bear in mind is that the major lower and upper components in the AR modular system are actually produced in a precious few foundries while there are many AR manufacturers putting rifles together.  No matter what name is stamped on the receiver, odds are the lowers (at least) come form one or two sources.

I have been watching a lot of different sources and would have no problem buying a gun.  My problem is that I have my first basic and want to get more specific.  Everyone under the sun has 1 in 9 twist, but I want 1 in 7.5 or 1 in 8.  I have a few other specifics that get into the regular special order catagory, and that is what they don't have the time to build right now.

I'm also looking to get that first 308, but want to set it up right away (the .223 got the just get one bug covered).  Same problem.

I can see where military orders and beat the next ban scramble can cause issues.  Oh well ... shopping is all part of the overall gun culture experience.

No shortage in my area (NE Ohio).  One dealer has all kinds and all price ranges and tons of accessories to boot and they sell like hotcakes.  They used to sell a lot of XD's but AR's fiill 5 tables or more now.

Guns & Ammo here in Memphis has close to 100 at any given time - RRA, Stag, Bushmaster, Colt, Barrett, DPMS...  Nice selection.
