New GSSF Shooter
« on: February 21, 2015, 03:06:37 PM »
Someone, on this board (not me), shot their first GSSF match last month and walked away with a gun, $100 and a knife.  Not a bad investment for $35 membership fee and $75 match fee.

Great shooting.

You forgot to add the ammo cost so it was a 'break even'.  ;)

Thank you Alf!
My goal was to not come in last. Things certainly worked out better than that. ;D

Those that remember Alf's reports about his GSSF matches will remember him saying how much he enjoyed them. That lit a spark for me and since I already had the Glocks, I entered 3 classes in the Boulder City, NV shoot.
I ended up with a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd in the classes I shot. (thank God Amateurs don't shoot against Masters!!)

I was a nervous fish in a small pond at that shoot but at least now I know how to set up my practice stations and have a feel for the "nuts & bolts" of how the matches are run. Hopefully I can shave off some time, be more accurate and remember to keep looking at the front sight!
(its amazing how much better that works)

Wasn't going to "out" you unless you wanted your name mentioned.

I'm proud of how well you did.

At some of the matches the local IDPA or USPSA club will have a bay and let you run a sample stage of their sport.  I think that's a great way to get shooters interested in other styles.

I missed the Griffin, GA match this weekend because of work.    I need to win a membership renewal soon.  I only paid for 1 year but have managed 4 based on winning renewals.

Sot my first GSSF match in Atlanta, IN. last year.
Did not score well enough to place but had a ball, great folks at the Atlanta ,IN conservation club.

I hope you get a chance to shoot more of them. I sure plan to!  I agree with Alf that there should be more shooting. I wish ALL the stages were 4 strings. (not just the plates)
Kind of boring to wait until your turn comes up and have it be over in just 30 rounds or less.

A couple of ways to shoot more.

At some matches, the local range will set up a plate practice area.  They'll charge a nominal fee and use it as a fund raiser, sometimes for a charitable cause.   At So River it's $5 for 4 magazines.   The RO got a little ticked cause I put 12rounds in each and I didn't take makeup shots.   I got to run through it 8 times.

Also at some matches the local IDPA or USPSA club may set up a bay with a simple stage to give shooters a taste of their sport.  You pay a small amount (~$2) to help defray targets.

I think GSSF should encourage more of this as well as side matches.
