Ode to the Sniper of this generation. Going Home.

I need to find out the model,caliber,  of these rifles. I have an idea or two, but .308? .338?, 30-06?, 300 Win Mag? Hell, 375 H+H?  Its about 3 1/2 min.

These three guys, with bolt actions, really lay it down, and I have had a window of funds to either get a used Sprg. Winchester Model 70, in 30-06 (previous post), or preferably a rifle the guys in the video are using. Ksail already sold me on a Puma, (thanks)!

The guy on the bottom of the first segment speedloads on a mission, plus there coming home.

AS always, I defer to the experts who can recognize a rifle right off.

I believe all 3 rifles are .308 M24 remingtons, with night force scopes and an aftermarket elevation turret that locks. McMillan A3 stocks.

If I could thank them I would, glad they are coming home. Glad they got to get a little laugh time behind the trigger as a last excursion.

Yes, they are Marines, So they are using custom Rem 700's in .308. There is no place to get these but the USMC as they are worked over by the armorers and then by the shooters themselves.

Every round they fire is handmade as well, just about everything the USMC snipers use is highly customized.

If you're interested in looking into something like this (as I was), take a good hard look at the
Remington 700 R5.  They build the M24 you just saw in that video.  Each year, production overruns
from the M24 orders are built on HS Precision stocks (instead of McMillen) and sold as the R5.
Finished in stainless instead of black, but the action and barrel are the same.

Thank you to everyone. the .308 is right on the mark for me. I know I only have access to "civilian" versions. I was just concerned that the military may have rejected them because something was wrong with it, and now they are available to the "public".

So, knowing my luck, I would end up with one that shot sub-MOA 6 inches off what I'm aiming at type thing...

My Mauser 7.65 x 53 is horseshoe and handgrenade close to a .308, but a modern version has been bumped to the "very short" list.

Disclaimer: I'm going off of memory here; I'll have to confirm the following stat next week.

A co-worker of mine used to be an armorer in the Air Force, and was then a door-kicker for the Memphis
police for several years.  He's the one who told me about the R5 in the first place.  He modified one for
a mutual friend (Wes at MSTN, for those keeping track) by pillar-bedding it in a McMillan stock and making
various other tweaks.

The figure of 10" at 1000 yards sticks in my mind, but I'll have to confirm that.  Regardless, that conversation
and the resale value of used R5s at snipershide.com (among others) told me that was the best value for
me - as accurate as many $2500 rifles for $950-in-the-box, and I can always 'upgrade' it later.  I've been
very impressed with it.

The barrel maker that contracts with the USMCs also sells to the public, but I can't for the life of me remember who it is....... but technically you can get a custom job that is about 99% of what the Marine snipers are using.

Thank you ericire12, the box looks like a Big Red Bow would look lovely around that case.

This is the "bug" I have between now and October.

I know .308 are "pricey", as all ammo is now. and a Norinco SKS in 7.62x39, is more "cost effective", but when presented the chance to get a Rem700? I have a weakness for getting a really good one when I can, plus that rifle can be "tweaked"
