Registering Drones
« on: October 22, 2015, 07:38:11 PM »
I was watching AgDay this morning, and I saw something shocking/scary.  There is a movement happening to require registering of drones.  The possibility is to register or license the operator, but they do not know what to do with autonomous drones.  Being an agriculture news program the focus was on farmers and those who serve them.  Because of where their drones are operated, away from populated areas and airports, they are indicating no issues and waiting to see what comes out.

Now the scary part.  A law professor from Iowa State talked about this being a non-issue and easy.  It can be done just "like we register guns."

What gun registration is out there that would compare to this and provide a model for this program?

did you know that before the change to 2.4 ghz you had to register your radio with the ffa?    there were many cases of rc planes cuasing the military to scramble jets to intercept.  if you still run a 72hz radio you have to register it with the ffa.  lots of people that run drones with  cameras on them run 72 hz as it can travel for miles, where 2.4 ghz  is only about 1/2 mile due to its frequency hoping( cycles from channel to channel in the band width)
if you run in the ham ranges of 50 or 53  hz you not only need to register it with the ffa, but fcc too.  you also require the correct lic to do so.

out west it has been a real issue with drones interfering with fire suppression aircraft.   even ca has passed a bill that allows them to be shot down if doing so.  a "press badge"  does not even give you a pass.

something like 10k events this year alone. that is why they are going after them.  the good news is the afa is working with the ffa to make requirments that will work for the hobbiest.

long story short, I have lots of 1st hand knowledge in this as I bought a rc strip that had to close do to this very issue.   it now has houses on it.   I did a lot of research on this when  I bought it.  the current rules are not being followed.  there are a select group of people that either don't know or don't care and that is cuasing the probs.

The major issue they are stating for the regulation is drones interfering with aircraft during fire fighting.  There was also a comment about police aircraft issues.  I am assuming that the cause is media shifting from helicopters, which were an issue as well, to drones.  There have also been a couple incidents of drones crashing and endangering people.

My concern isn't with the drone registration.  My comment is really focused on a law professor who believes we register firearms.

I think one or more states has universal registration.  Doesn' t Illinois require an ID for all firearm owners?

Not a huge worry, IMHO.  To illustrate my lack of concern I cite the current WH resident--a supposed "law professor" who regularly demonstrates his lack of knowledge on essentially every/any subject.

Law profs are not known for having much that can be termed general knowledge.  But they are an argumentative collection of bastards.

I rest my case.

My concern goes to the point that our nation has been dumbed down, and is going deeper daily.  We deal with people who have an attention span that is hardly long enough for sound bites and headlines anymore.  Want to know how bad it is?  Go to an online newspaper, read the headline, read the story, read the comments posted, and take a look at how many think the headline or the photos are the story.

Take the issue of short attention spans and the lack of reading ability and comprehension, and apply these to the idea that if you repeat a lie enough it "becomes" the truth.  Think about how the terms "assault weapon" and "gun violence" have become common, even among those who used to correct people on both of these term usage.

To add a little positive spin to this thread, remember that in a world where all are blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Having even a little bit of common sense puts those of us here head and shoulders above average.

I'm just saying...
