I debated about publishing this.  Maybe to warn others.  Maybe to try and clear my quilt.

Here's a picture of my dry fire targets.  Notice a problem?



I have a dummy moon clip that I use to practice reloads.  it has no primers.  Last night I took a break during reloading and thought I'd do a little dry-fire practice and reloads.   Grabbed a live moon clip by mistake and took a practice shot at the target.   (At least it was an "A".   Okay, okay, not funny.)

Fortunately, my dry fire targets back up to a wall which is underground.  So no harm done except to my hearing and my ego.

Here's a reminder just above the door on my safe.   I put it there when I went on vacation to remind my sons, should they open the safe, that it wasn't.... safe.



My dry fire moon clip looked just like a regular moon clip except no primers, which obviously, I didn't see the difference.  Hopefully, this small change will help me in the future.



I didn't really forget rule #1, but I forgot to double/triple check before dry fire practice.  Fortunately for me I also have the other rules.   Also, I was tired which contributed to not noticing the primers.

Be careful out there and if you forget Rule #1, remember #2 abd #3 and #4.

My first introduction to this game put me face to face with several top guns.  One who is quoted and referred to often around here told me a couple things:
1.  Relax (during the competition we were shooting in), and quit worrying about getting a DQ.  There are two types of shooters out there - Those who have been DQ,ed, and those who will be.  It is going to happen, so quit worrying about it;
2.  You can tell the shooters who actually practice, and practice properly by dry firing with their actual guns.  They are the ones that have shot their tv(s).

Sorry it happened to you Alf!  We play the game, and stuff happens.  However, your wise decision on backdrop minimized the issue.

Damn, wish I could say it hasn't happened to me. As I tell scouts at shooting events "Guns are sneaky they will load themselves when you are not looking. That is why you always treat a gun as if it is loaded"

     I screwed up once,  I had bought a .45 John Daly 1911 frame.  Had it in the safe for a while and 1 day I just wanted to have it in my hands. Took the Mag out and pulled the trigger.   BANG     forgot about the 1 in the chamber, it went through the bed mattress, and hit a coil in the box spring mattress and then the hardwood floor.  The first time I ever screwed up on a saftey rule like that !

    Did I mention , I had 5-6 adult whiskey beverages in me when that happened ?

     I just love the feel of those 1911    .45's !

Thanks for posting this as a reminder to all of us!  This goes to show why you should always have a good backstop even for dry firing practice.

My uh-oh was when I was shooting a friend's pistol. I thought it fired the last round and I tilted the gun to get a better look at the slide which it turned out was forward. I turned the gun back the right direction and it went off. I almost put a round over the berm because my finger was on the trigger. That was the only ND I can remember and was lucky it turned out okay.
