Big Move

First, I must apologize for a very long absence, but sometimes life, and work get in the way.  My question is this, I am moving from the Peoples Republic of New York to the free and open state of Arizona. How do I get my collection of peashooters and the ammo that goes with it, from point A to point B?  Separate vehicles for each, ammo and firearms?  I want the most hassle free journey I can get. So anyone who has pulled off a similar move or has any advice, feel free to chime in. Thank you in advance.

If I remember correctly, Federal law permits interstate transport of legally owned firearms and ammo from point A to point B (even through anti-gun states) as long as guns are unloaded and in separate containers from ammo.

Choose you route carefully, and once you get out of the NY/NJ area, you should be OK.

I've driven across America from coast to coast and done the New England to the Midwest on at least twenty occasions.  I've never once been stopped by the police, ever!

As Chuck says, there are laws to protect you but keeping your head, driving within the rules (somewhat) and making no silly decisions should be sufficient. 

My issue would be sleeping at night and what to do with a trunk full of firearms and what do with theft prevention.

That is what I recalled Peg, but after so many years in New Yorkastan with their total disregard or federal law, I just wanted some more opinions.
The sleeping at night thing may be a problem. If my son comes with me, maybe we can drive straight through.

I am planning a move right now as well but a much shorter distance.

One thing I would suggest is the "Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States".  You can get a copy at www.gunlawguide.com.

The Federal forearms protection law lets you just case them up (unloaded of course) and pack them with the test of your stuff . BUT stay out of Illinois, they will arrest you any way, same as NY.

Unless you have gazillions of rounds of ammo, I'd ship the ammo.   Don't know if USPS allows ammo in flat rate boxes but that'd be the way to go.   UPS/DHL/FX could get expensive.

I moved from GA to TX and then 18months later back to GA.   I put all the guns in the trunk, obeyed the traffic laws and had no problem.  At night I stayed at a motel with a down-n-out room, parking directly in front of my room.   Moved all the guns inside overnight and back out in the morning.

I moved all of my firearms and ammunition in a 26 ft. U-Haul from Chicago to Arizona back in 1991. It took 3 days and I never had an issue.

Interstate 81 south all the way to Knoxville and 40 west to AZ...

Get thee to the south as quickly as possible and then west, young man...  I once took a trip to MI in late November that took 40 hours for a 15 hour trip.  It's winter...go south...
