I never thought I'd hear people (Kids most likely) espouse that its better to live on their knees than stand on their feet but that's what I found when reading the replies to an editorial on Gawker.  (Everything there is an editorial and badly written as well.)

Rome fell?   I was just there last year and I don't think the Italian noticed.

For about 300 years Rome was a ghost town with a population measured in dozens instead of thousands. The last time the Vandals sacked it they broke down the viaducts to cut off the water supply, (even then no one drank from the Tiber) The city it's self was pretty much lost to legend in an uncivilized land in chaos until the rise of the French kingdom brought an end to the dark ages.
