Finally Got Some Trigger Time In
« on: June 18, 2016, 06:50:31 PM »
So I finally got in some trigger time recently.  Today I had the Remington 700 in .308 out with 168 grain boat tails.  It shoots sub MOA with the can on it...better than I can shoot.  I put my 5.56 DMR out on the table too.  It was like an old friend...and heck, it's been like 3 years since I shot it and that was at a Vicker's class.

Then there was the 22WMR 1894 M Marlin...finally found a round that shot well with it the Winchester 40 grain Supreme...problem I don't think they make it anymore.  Pulled out the Marlin 39A too...

I'm going to have to apologize to Alf for that post today.....

 ;D

I took no offense.   I've pared down my collection some.    It was fun having some of the classics,
But what am I really going to shoot?

Oh, wait!  A new model blaster was just introduced.

Glad you got trigger time in.  Sounds like they all shoot very well.

I think most guns shoot better than we think.

I have a Remington 308 beavertail stock, heavy barrel in addition to the tac model I was shooting yesterday.  I picked it up from the used rack.  It shot terrible.  Finally I zeroed (silver dollar cluster) in on a hot barrel.  I let it cool and then shot it.  First shot was 12 o'clock and high by 6 inches or more at 100 yards...as I shot it the pattern made an actual spiral at 4 o'clock, 7 o'clock 10 o'clock, 12 o'clock and then 2 o'clock to center...like a 380 or 400 degree circle in to the "silver dollar cluster" in the center.

I ran a dollar down the stock and hit wood.  After I got it home with the dremel tool and brought it back to the range my 5 shot group at 200 yards was plus or minus about 3/8" center to center vertically and it strung about 2" across (wind was blowing).  Needless to say it's a keeper now.

I cannot say the same about a Winchester Model 70 heavy barrel beavertail stock I picked up 10 years ago...got it in .22-250 and nothing I could do with that dang thing made it shoot better than a 3"-4" group at 100 yards.

It was replaced with a CZ 550 in 22-250 that shoots maybe 1-1/2" groups at 100 yards.  Not very good I'd say but better than the Model 70

So I finally got in some trigger time recently..........

I'm looking to do more of that myself. Since I retired we've been talking about perhaps moving back to Lake Havasu City. But after taking a trip back there a few months ago, we've found it's lost it's allure. There is a lot of property on the market for long periods of time. And the bulk of it is way overpriced for what you get. That, and the fact the whole place has been overrun by Californian's.

So instead we made the decision to stay here and do some remodeling. This bathroom project was the last of it. Now the place is looking really nice, and I'm going to have more time to shoot. Most all of it will be indoors until it cools down in the Fall. Mel bought be 2 shooting cards from one of our local indoor ranges a couple of years ago, and I have yet to use them. Now that everything is done around here, I'm going to start.

I'm also going to order some prepped .223 / 5.56 MM brass from Everglades Brass and load up a bunch of .223 for next Winter. If you take a couple of AR's to the range, they chew it up pretty fast. All that's left to do around the house are new granite kitchen countertops, and a backsplash. And that I'll hire out at the end of Summer. It shouldn't take more than a day or 2 for them to install everything, once it gets cut.

2 Days?  I take it you aren't contracting through the Home Despot this time?   :o

Maybe Tab can help you out this time and save you a little time?

Regardless, if you wanna be by a lake you should look towards TX for affordable properties.

Or maybe Oklahoma:  https://www.google.com/maps/dir/36.3690824,-96.1283006//@36.3689063,-96.1299227,917m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1

Not my exact location....but close.

Puts you within 30 minutes of here:  https://www.google.com/maps/@36.246072,-95.9056016,265m/data=!3m1!1e3 and that is already within 5-10 minutes of public hunting.

I'm too much of a desert rat to return back to the Midwest. I've been out here for the last 25 years, and it's where I'll spend the rest of my days. I really like Sunshine and no rain or snow. It spoils you after a while. We bought our new Jeep Grand Cherokee a year ago last April. And it's never seen rain. Except from the garden hose the 3 times we've had to wash it so far.
