found a good deal at Gander Mountain
« on: September 15, 2016, 05:48:25 PM »
I had some time to kill the other day ,so I went to the local Gander Mtn..Looking at their used gun section I saw a 3 inch S&W Model 60 for $233.99.I asked to look at it and it was a 60-7 Lady Smith.action was tight and trigger was very smooth.I figured for the price, how could I go wrong.I bought it for my Mother, since the only pistol she has is a 1958 Colt Detective Special with a Pachmayr presentation grip on it(it's huge, doubles the size of the gun) I know she'll be happy with a gun she can carry rather than one that gets left home. They also had a Ruger P95 for $150 and a Sig 226 for $309.99 which I may go back and pick up.

Alf,Nope, says made in America on it,They had it listed as .38S&W caliber,That's why I asked to see it.They left off the special and I think that's why it was still there.Everybody who saw it thought it was .38 S&W and not .38 special.

Yes those are good prices.  $150 for a pistol?  Shoot, you gotta get that just have another lay-around in the house.

The M60 was of course S&W's first stainless steel gun.

It is also one of the models that has been produced in varying calibers and different frames.

Started out as .38spl on the J frame in 1965.   In 1996 the M60 was produced on a J Magnum sized frame in .357.  That makes it somewhat unique because for other calibers they would have produced a different model number.  Think 624/629, .44spl/.44mag.    But then, since the change to .357mag, they've made .38spl only versions again.

Quote
Actually at the time it was technically an E38 frame.  Blue frames being J, K, L & N,  and stainless frames were E, F, H & G.  Rumors are that since, like Kleenex tissues and Xerox copies, JKLN have become ubiquitous and the factory has quit using EFGH.  Yes, the 686 is/was an H frame.  They way they spin it is the 686 is an "L Sized Frame"

The -7 was only produced in 1990.   In 1996 the M60 was produced on a J Magnum sized frame in .357.
I have a -15 3".   They  were up to -18 revision in 2005, so I'm guessing current models are -20s?

The one good thing about big box stores and their gun departments is that from time to ti.e the management looks at the age of items in inventory and says "move 'em!"  The price will get slashed, and someone gets a huge bargin.  It pays to check them out.

Nice find..

As I have been the recipient of a bargain basement Sig P6, it's nice to see folks find some gems...

Nice catch at a nice price Majer.  I think the Lady Smiths bring a bit of a premium over standard models of the same gun.
