Sig Pro SP 2022
« on: November 20, 2016, 08:44:56 AM »
Funny story...I've had a Sig Pro SP 2022 in 9mm for 10 years...WAY before they were cheap and WAY before they were cool. I believe it was their first polymer frame pistol.
There seem to be a lot of fanboys on the Youtube showing them off now, but ten years ago, people looked at me like I had two heads when I showed it to them. This one has "Frame made in Germany" but the upper has no such info. Still, I think it is of a different generation than what is out there being sold for under $500 today.

I'm not a high volume shooter but over 10 years I've shot 8K of all kinds of factory loads, hand loads, lead heads, all of it, through this little trooper with not ONE new part.

The funny part of the story is that it has never had one hiccup, so I have never gone farther than a field strip. I know, pretty shabby of me and bordering on Sig abuse, but I just didn't think about it.

So yesterday I went out to my club to shoot this old girl and my new Gold Cup that is still dirty...intending to pop off a few then do a nice cleanup.

Beautiful day, 62 degrees in NJ in mid November, what's not to like?  9 rounds into it we have a very rare FTE. I cleared all but the spent casing that was still in the barrel and when I closed the slide everything locked up. Could NOT budge the slide...it was locked hard with the barrel.

So I shot the 45 for a little then headed home. I did a little yard work then started messing with the Sig.
After thinking about the problem and noodling with it I managed to get the breakdown lever/barrel stud out and got the slide off. A little careful tapping got everything cleared, then I had to really drive the spent casing out of the barrel. It had expanded, jammed in the barrel, and the ejector wouldn't let loose so, JAMMMM!  In hindsight I might have been able to get purchase on the extractor and flex enough to break loose, so there is a lesson learned.  Anyway, at that point I thought, "I've never taken this thing down". Off I went, and we ended up like this:

I had always thought the gun didn't loosen up all that much over the years, but it was actually the gobs of oily dirt-muck all over everything that made it feel that way. After cleaning everything and reassembly, this little baby runs like a sewing machine, and it's still accurate and fun to shoot.

I've heard that the new generation has some QC issues occasionally, but for the money this pistol is a winner.

I have both a 9mm and 40sw 2022. I was lucky enough to get them cheap, I payed $389 or so each. The 40 never a problem but the 9mm omg. I sent it back to SIG for failure to eject and mag release would stick or mags would fall out during recoil. I got I fixed and runs perfectly. I get some flack from my friends that own 226's, but I have 2 guns and kit to go with them for the price of one gun.

They're around but mags are not!  I managed to find three factory type on eBay for a decent bid.  Other than that they're all Promags.  The new P225 mags don't work in the old design.

Jay, I've got to say that sure looks like one nice place to shoot.  I'm jealous.

So how much are these things...and how much were they?  I never considered a Sig back when because they were high $$$$ and/or the guys around here only carried the expensive ones.

I still need a Sig...besides those dang Mosquito 22's I have that aren't quite Sigs....cracked a slide on one and can't buy a replacement without sending it in....

Rastus,
Thanks, we have a wonderful little club. Two pistol ranges, a covered 25/50 range, covered 100,200,and 300yd rifle, and 2 trap layouts, all outdoors. We also have an indoor, 9 window to the outside,  25 yd pistol caliber range. We have Sunday breakfasts at the club house 5 months a year, two festivals with tailgate flea market and cookout, and other stuff. I am often alone when I go there (as in no other members). Since it's 5-10 minutes from home sometimes I run over just to try 20 rounds with a new load or something. It's really a blessing.

Bud's has the 2022 in 9 or 40 for 479.99, but I have seen them advertised in the low 400's and occasionally below $400. I bought mine from a dealer who is not known for his good pricing, and paid $600-something, but I think it was when they first came out here, or close to it. It's a great pistol, has two sized grips (new ones might even have 3 grips). The ads say 15+1 but my 2 mags only take 14 rounds.
