""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

In the Amazon Prime series Patriot, they played Train Song by Vashti Bunyan. It's from a collection of her mid-sixties singles cuts called Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind – Singles and Demos 1964 to 1967. She began her career in the mid-1960s and released a debut album, Just Another Diamond Day, in 1970. The album sold very few copies and Bunyan, discouraged, abandoned her musical career. By 2000, the album had acquired a cult following; it was re-released and Bunyan recorded more songs, beginning the second phase of her musical career after a gap of thirty years. :o She released two more albums, Lookaftering in 2005, and Heartleap in 2014. Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, founder members of the Rolling Stones. The song was released first by the singing duo Dick and Dee Dee in early 1965, who were a supporting act for the Rolling Stones when they first toured the U.S. in 1964, and then by Vashti Bunyan in May 1965 as her debut single. Jimmy Page played guitar on this song, during his session work of the sixties.  8)

Bunyan's recording went virtually unnoticed at the time, but became a rare collector's item after her resurgence in the 2000s. It was then reissued on the compilation Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind - Singles and Demos 1964 to 1967 (2007). A version of the song by the Rolling Stones was recorded on 13 February 1964, but released only on their 1975 album Metamorphosis. The Dick and Dee Dee version sounds like a 45 played at 33 1/3 RPM. The Rolling Stones version isn't very good either. The Vashti Bunyan version sounds better, but Train Song sounds better than all 3 of them.

While I was watching the show, they showed an Applebee's commercial a few times. They played part of Only Time by Enya on it. Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, anglicised as Enya Patricia Brennan is an Irish singer and composer. She's also known for the song Orinoco Flow. Those were her 2 big hits in the U.S.

The time for action is upon us and the enemy is at our gates. Let us not allow them one more inch of advancement but instead throw them through the gates of Hell.

China Girl is a song written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie in 1976, and first released by Pop on his debut solo album, The Idiot, in 1977. Inspired by an affair Pop had with a Vietnamese woman, the lyrics tell a story of unrequited love for the protagonist's Asian girlfriend, realizing by the end that his Western influences are corrupting her. Like the rest of The Idiot, Bowie wrote the music and Pop improvised the lyrics while standing at the microphone. :o  The song was released as a single in May 1977 and failed to chart. Bowie recorded a more well-known version during the sessions for his 1983 album Let's Dance, reportedly to assist Pop with his poor finances at the time. It was co-produced by Nile Rodgers, who transformed the song into a pop number with an Asian-inspired guitar riff. Bowie's version was released as the second single from the album in May 1983, reaching number two in the UK and number 10 in the US. Its accompanying music video featured New Zealand actress Geeling Ng. Containing an interracial romance and clashing cultural perspectives, Bowie said the video was intended as a statement against racism. He performed the song frequently during his concert tours. Bowie's version has also appeared on compilation albums and lists of the artist's best songs.

Michigan native Iggy Pop (James Newell Osterberg Jr.), formerly of The Iguanas (1963–1967), is 78 years old. He's been performing shirtless since I was a kid. Maybe it's time to stop. He looked leathery for decades, then a bit like jerky. Now he looks like a walker on The Walking Dead.

I was listening to Puddles Pity Party again, and this had me laughing out loud. The Who's Pinball Wizard, sung to the tune of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.

As I was listening to Big Bad John, I thought of a couple other songs with a kind of "trapped underground" theme.

Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth came out in 1974. And Return to the Centre of the Earth came out 25 years later, in 1999. If you have the CD you can program your CD player to play only the odd number tracks, narrated by Patrick Stewart, or just the even number tracks if you only want to hear music. Or simply press play and listen to the whole thing.
