Suggestions for TV viewing.
« on: December 22, 2018, 05:38:51 PM »
I have no idea if anyone is interested or if anyone will have anything to add, but since we have a couple of music threads, a biscuit  thread and even a what are you eating thread, I thought I'd add this one.

My purpose is to bring only one series to folks attention. If I have seen a more compelling TV series I can't remember it.

So if you want a series with genuine human drama  and immersion with nary a Super Hero in sight but so much common human heroics, give  "Call the Midwife" a go....if you have not already.

I found the first seven series on Netflix and have heard heard series 8 and 9 have been commissioned by the BBC.... plus some Christmas specials.  Absolutely nothing gun related, pro or con, just a compelling heartwarming story.

P.S. Have your allergy meds handy.

I never saw it but just checked and PBS is showing it. There's going to be a Holiday Special on Christmas.

Give it a try...not just the Christmas special, but the regular episodes.

I'll buy you a beer if you, or anyone, if you don't like it when you are in town    :) :)

Solus, I will happily encourage members to watch your suggested TV drama.  Call the Midwife is a captivating tale.  Bunny and I have enjoyed watching the series on our local PBS station.  There are moments when my tired, old ears have a bit of trouble with some of the accents, but the struggle is worth it.

As a further suggestion, there are any number of excellent series available through Amazon Prime--many of them produced in the U.K.  Currently, Bunny and I are enjoying Catastrophe.  Story line involves an American ad agency guy who has a brief affair with a British school teacher nearing the end-zone of her ticking clock.  She ends up pregnant and he ends up in England, married to her, and faced with a lot of cultural learning.  Funny, dramatic, and an all around great tale.

There is also another series set outside of New York in the 1980s called Red Oaks.  Quite an interesting watch.  Shows a part of America I knew very little about.  You get the first three seasons with Prime membership.

So sit back and enjoy a little tube time.

I'm watching Dead like me on amazon now. Not heart warming, no really good plot, I just think it's funny. I'm on episode 14 of season one. Grim reaper....good stuff!

I'll have to settle for diet root beer. I think I have 3 bottles left.

There are several shows I'd like to see but I'm still 80 episodes behind on the shows I haven't quit watching yet, including the whole season of TWD. I have to delete more shows from my computer. I keep trimming back but can't get caught up.

I don't drink regular sodas often, but I treat myself a couple times a month to a good root beer. If you can find them, Red Arrow is the best followed by Sioux City's stuff (that's the brand of the birch beer that's in the fridge). Norton's is pretty good and they carry a diet root beer. I like A&W and MUG diet root beer also. The Red Arrow, Norton's and Sioux City drinks can be found at Cracker Barrel (along with a lot of other old style sodas made with cane sugar like they are supposed to), and I'll catch them on 1/2 price clearance from time to time (because a label is scratched or such).

As to the TV shows, I don't watch a lot of newer series shows. I guess TWD is the only series I watch any more. The last one before that was Sons of Anarchy, and I have all seasons on DVD now.
I like several shows on History Channel, but I have gotten into watching old western series shows that were before my time or came on channels that we didn't get when I was a kid. I can Youtube many of them but a lot come on Encore Western channel and INSP channel on DishNet.
