democracy vs republic - definitions

I've noticed that most of our politicians (and the media) have forgotten the meanings of these words and what they stand for. I also find myself arguing with some of the out-laws over definitions and why we don't want changes in the way we govern. I guess we'll see a change in our vocabulary due to the repeated use of the wrong words by the media as they have changed so many things before. keep repeating it and you'll brainwash them, right?
anyway, thought I'd throw that one out there as some of the quotes that have been posted are sure to be full of these common mistakes. you know...

A more in-depth treatment government's role in a free society can be found in Milton Friedman's 1962 book, "Capitalism and Freedom".   The book is currently available in a 40th anniversary reprint.   Heavy reading.

Thanks for the great links. It fits right in with this other great link of mp3 readings of some of the framing documents including The Federalist Papers and Common Sense, among others.
