No that's the problem, all the burners are on the top causing too much heat on the top of the baking. Raising them closer to the burners would make things worse. Miss Kitty's birthday is next month, and I think this will be perfect. For me too, as I do all the cheesecakes and torts.
on the very top rack put a layer of foil with Shiney side up, just in the middle where the cake bakes. It will help a lot at reflecting the direct heat. A cookie sheet works too, but is often too big and messes up the heat sensor. You are running a thermoter right?
