Happy Birthday United States Army!
« on: June 15, 2021, 06:34:36 PM »
The United States Army celebrated its 246th birthday yesterday. I forgot about it this year, but I'll be celebrating the 250th birthday in 2025. It's easy to forget since I don't see people posting about it like they do the younger, smaller Marines Corps' birthday. I think it's just a case of the new kid always getting more attention. ;)
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. The difference is that the US Army could not exist before the US did, where as the Marine Corps were basically a bunch of pirates and they didn't need an actual "country".
And THAT is why the Navy and Marines are the Senior Service, we've been doing OUR thing along the coasts a lot longer than the Army.   ;D  ;D
